computers down at work today

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I work in customer service dept.for a major appliance manufacturer. In past years they have always been open on Saturdays, & labor day, but this past weekend we closed. I thought that was unusual, & wondered if they were going to use that time for remediation or testing. Well, our computers were down all day today. We still answered the phones, but had to ask customers to please call back tomorrow. Also, they were asking for volunteers to work over so they can test the system. I was tempted to stay out of cuiosity, but the day was long & stressful. When I was explaining the situation to one customer, he said he could sympathize, as he works with computers daily. I asked what his oppinion of Y2K was. He said he is a technical telecommunications computer engineer for AT & T. He said it is a mess, & suggested I take my money out of the bank. He said there is no way they will be compliant, & it is going to be mass confusion. I would have liked to discuss it further, but we are sometimes monitored for quality assessment, so I didn't ask any more. We started preparing over a year ago, & didn't quit, but several weeks ago we lightened up, & haven't done much. Well, I am fired up again. I am so thankful we started when we did. Also, I went to a family reunion this past weekend, & lots of family members who have been dgi's are all of a sudden gi's. What a relief. On the way home, I stopped at the Lodge iron cookware outlet, & bought an iron (heat on wood burner) a BIG dutch oven, & another skillet.

This is one of those bad news/good news posts. Bad to hear our worst fears confirmed, good to hear your family is preparing. Sure wish mine was.

Carol Ann, I love the Lodge dutch oven,..! Works great for cooking over a fireplace. I was thinking of buying that iron too, by the way. For anyone who cares Lodge has a website at www.lodgemfg.com. However, I have to admit everything I've bought from them I've gotten cheaper at KMart than what they list on their website. I guess paying the shipping on cast iron has it's disadvantages ;) Wish I had one of those outlet stores near me!!

Kritter,

So, do you consider that Lodge dutch oven a possibly wasted Y2K prep item? <:)=

Oh, and being a tech support dude, as far as being down at work today, about the only news I see here is that it's not Monday!

Not good comments from the AT&T guy though. Not good at all...

Tick... Tock... <:00=

Carol Ann, Would that Lodge Outlet be in South Pittsburg and does the name Sand Mountain familiar?

-- Lumber Jack (johnsellis@webtv.net), September 08, 1999.

Hey Lumberjack! It is the outlet in South Pittsburg & I sure do know where Sand Mountain is. We live close to Cleveland, Tn. between Knoxville, & Chattanooga. Do you live on Sand Mountain? I have been reading this forum over a year, & not too many from Tennessee/Alabama, that I know of. We are practically neighbors. It's great to hear from someone in the area.
