Have you bought an Alladin lamp recently?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I'm searching for a supplier (not Lehmans or Walton) that sells Alladin lamps. Found a new shipment at Ace Hardware, but they are considerably higher than I seem to remember that the online supplier was selling them for. I lost my hard drive recently, and am going buggy trying to find this. Can anyone out there help me?

Be sure you consider the cost of shipping, and make sure they are available NOW before you mailorder. Time is short. Being able to walk out with something immediately is getting more and more attractive. And who knows, maybe it will spark an interesting conversation with the local hardware store staff. Don't forget extra parts. I got a couple of the Genie II's. (cheapest one - the workings are the same, so why pay extra for fancy?). In a lights-out weekend test I discovered they are SO bright they are hard to work around without a shade. So I got a couple of the paper shades. Now I just need to secure a supplier for larger quantities of kerosene (at a better price) than the 1 qt. to 1 gal. containers. Also wish I had gotten the kind you can refill without taking apart. Oh well.

Mumsie,

There's a guy in Washington, D.C. (Jim Keyser) that is selling the tall aluminum Aladdin oil lamp, a bug screen, 2 spare mantles, one spare wick, and one spare chimney for $US 150 (shipping included). That's almost the same as Good Pickins or Lehmans. The only advantage, however, is that he ships the lamp and spares on the day he gets money. If you are interested, send me an email and I'll try to get more information.

He also sells 3.5 gallon pails of various things like powdered egg, cracked wheat, etc... 5 gallon nitrogen packed buckets of wheat, corn, and rolled oats... and cases of canned ground beef, chicken, and turkey. The 3.5 gallon pails have cool screw top lids. I forget how much they go for, however. I think he also has 5 gallon buckets of nitrogen packed wheat, corn, and rolled oats for $US 20 each, but I heard he was down to 10 or 20 of these each. This was last month. I think he was asking $US 75 per case of the canned meat, poultry, etc.-- if I remember correctly.

If you want a prettier Aladdin and can wait, I do make trips up to Lancaster, PA from time to time and I'd be happy to pick one up for you. Usually, I get a better than Lehman's price ($10 to $20 better). My next trip up there will be in October. Ultra Pure Lamp Oil is a very good deal up there: $18 for 5 gallons. And they have the pump that fits the 2.5 gallon jugs which makes it much easier to dispense.

Sincerely, Stan Faryna

Just a few left at a local hardware store... $54.99. If knowing that price helps in your comparison shopping. (Glass base.)

There is perhaps one reason to consider the slightly more expensive model. IMHO, the ones that can be refilled without removing the mantle would be superior, as they would avoid wear and tear on the rather delicate wick. I have yet to purchase one however, so would enjoy hearing from someone with experience.

Sincerely,

Another veritable treasure trove of advice!

Stan, you are a Mensch! Thanks so much! I'll ponder on the options and write to you soon.

Another thing Vern/bacon doesn't "get", is that most of the preppers that post here are generous and goodhearted people. What we are talking about is the Little Red Hen syndrome. Please at least do your best to prepare, don't just show up for the cake when your stomach growls.
