China Mobile Phone Firm To Carry Out Y2K Tests

Updated 6:58 AM ET September 7, 1999BEIJING (Reuters) - China's largest mobile phone group said Tuesday it will conduct Y2K tests on its software, payment systems and time devices this week.

China Mobile Communication Group would carry out tests from midnight Friday for five hours, but there would be no interruption of service, a company official said. "Our customers will not be affected," the official said.

The group had 32.1 million network users at the end of July, the official said.

The millennium bug could cause chaos around the world if old computers programmed to recognize the year by the last two digits crash when they confuse the year 2000 with 1900.

China Mobile Communication Group has already completed millennium bug tests on its major equipment and managerial systems and is confident its network will be fully compliant by the end of September, the official said.

The group was recently created out of the split of giant China Telecom and will act as an umbrella corporation for local mobile networks.
