Having trouble playing .DAT with my win/95

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

things worked fine about a month ago. i played VCD's fine using windows media player by opening the DAT file in the mpeg dir. now when i try that i get an invalid file message. playing DAT files of my HD works fine. i tried xing MpeG player and i get a MCI driver error (whats MCI?). the weird thing is that using explorer i cant copy the DAT files off the CD to the HD (gives an access denied) the VCDs play fine on other computers so i am sure that its my computer. any ideas short of reinstalling win95? maybe a software i installed that stopped the vcds from working? please help me.

Uninstall CD-R burning programs, such as Adaptec Easy CD Creator and in particular, Direct-CD. Please reply to let us know whether this method solves your problems.

Uninstall MPEG player. Also it may be help to reinstall your video card drivers and directx. Next try to use a software programmore suited for your OS...PowerVCD is one. It will work with any configuration.

In windows 98 if you are missing the following file scsi1hlp.vxd in the windows\system\iosubsys, you get the same error. It appears that this file is necessary for the MCI driver to read the cdrom as well as having explorer transferring the file back to the hard disk. This file is on the windows 98 disk. It is possible that windows 95 also requires this file. When you install some of the CDR burner programs, this file is removed since it interferes with them (except for EZCD creator).

Your registry is shot and since you do not have Win98, you can not use the SCANREG /FIX option. Windows 95 registry is hard to restore by hand(same for Win98s that is why that option exists). Here is the instructions for Full Win95 and Upgrade Win95

How to hack Win95 so you can reinstall it without reformatting or reinstalling.

Step 1: Move everything from the startup folder to another place Step 2: Using the MS-DOS Prompt rename the WIN.COM file to WIN.OLD Step 3: Restart the PC Step 4: At the Starting Windows 95 prompt press F8(Tip: just keep tapping F8 when the memory test is over) Step 5: Pick the option for dos mode Step 6: Run the setup from the Win95 CD. Step 6a: IF USING UPGRADE CD->insert first disk from MS-DOS 6 or Win 3.1 Step 7: When Win95 is done installing over itself, run the install for you favorite VCD player program.

Mr somebody is right, scsi1hlp.vxd is vital for windows 95 & 98 to work correctly with VCDs. CD-burning softwares are the culprits in stuffing it up. I am surprised that uninstalling these softwares hasn't got your vital driver file back.

Look again for this file, ensuring explorer shows even hidden files, by using the 'view option - show all files'.

If you find a file named 'scsi1hlp.oldvx_', simply rename it back to it's correct form.

If this file is absent, copy it from another computer running windows 95 or 98.

You must switched off PC and reboot before this driver is effective.

Keep us posted, and good luck.

i have a file in my windows/system/Iosubsys called 'Scsi1hlp.hp'. it was named something else but hewellet packard made me change the file name and the extension to .hp, when i installed my burner. they said it would not have conflicts if i changed some stuff around.

Aha, so you are your own culprit. You have with your very own guilty hands renamed 'scsi1hlp.vxd' to 'scsi1hlp.hp' and is now prevented from playing VCDs. Your options now are:-

1) Work effectively with your HP 8100 burner while keeping the file as 'scsi1hlp.hp' and not able to play VCDs.

2) Rename this file to 'scsi1hlp.vxd', cold reboot and be able to play VCDs but not able to use your HP burner.

3) Or just keep renaming this file, cold rebooting, to suit the situation as outlined in items 1) & 2).

Good luck. Please respond.

I saw all your replies.

Here is a way to play VCD as well as work with HP 8100 burner.

1. Copy the concerned file( either scsi1hlp.hp or scsi1hlp.vxd) to a temporary folder. 2. Rename to the other extension. If it is .hp to .vxd and vice-versa. 3. Copy the renamed file back to the original folder.

Now both the s/ws can be executed. Isn't it ?

1) Work effectively with your HP 8100 burner while keeping the file as 'scsi1hlp.hp' and not able to play VCDs.

2) Rename this file to 'scsi1hlp.vxd', cold reboot and be able to play VCDs but not able to use your HP burner.

3) Or just keep renaming this file, cold rebooting, to suit the situation as outlined in items 1) & 2).

Good luck. Please respond.
