NERC electric industry drill on 9/9/99

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

How many of the electric industries in your area planned a "shut down", on key equipment for generation or for distribution of power, on 9/9/99? Here in the north west, all sorts of equipment will be shut down, planned outage as it is called in the industry, for routine maintenance, on 9/9/99. As an employee for the industry with my eyes and ears wide open to the coming event, of Y2k, I fear a cover up of the future problems we all will endure and face.

R.J. Renolds:

The articles that I've read indicate that the 9/9/99 exercise is to "see how the industry will react" in the event of Y2K disruptions. That's all. It sounds like another _useless_ "table top" fantasy exercise.

The U.S. Air Force acknowledges the uselessness of "table top" exercises by conducting--since March 1999--multiple "simulated" real life Y2K scenarios expected in Japan. (I have a brother stationed in Japan that confirms these exercises: the infrastructure is assumed to be kaupt: no power; no water; no sewage; no telecom; et al.) Ergo, the development of "U.S.A.F. Y2K Contingency Management Plan" (19 May 1999).

The only "cover up" is the ubiquitous and deceipt of the "Y2K readiness" hoax. The notion of "readiness" only indicates the status of assuming there is a viable consequence management plan for responding to Y2K collapses.

If you look around at the systems that have failed to-date, most of those institutions are experiencing trmendous difficulties executing any contingency plans--WITH THE INFRASTRUCTURE INTACT!! What will happen WITHOUT THE INFRASTRUCTURE?!?

We'll find ourselves tossed into "The Postman" (Kevin Costner) and/or "Road Warrior" (Mel Gibson) scenario like a frog into boiling pot of water.

Most people have their "Eyes Wide Shut" about Y2K, and will not move off that position.

Keep your eyes wide open, R.J.! And, Good Luck! ...

Regards, Bob Mangus
