After four days of hearings, the confirmation process for the 19 commission candidates is turning into a test of strength between parliament members and Romano Prodi, the former Italian prime minister already selected as the next president of the EU head office.

On Wednesday, Prodi hinted that he would resign if the Parliament failed to confirm his team for a full five-year period. Some parliament members have suggested that the Commission should be approved only for a probationary period until the end of the year.
