Spouse just came in from work. Heard the following public service announcement:

"Winter storm Warning! Snow and ice possible. Make sure you have flashlights, warm clothing, and enough food and fresh water for each member of your family to last up to 7 days.....This has been a public service announcement from your local FEMA office."

It was 86 degrees with high humidity here today.

Wonder what *that* was all about?

BTW, the station was KCXL - AM broadcast from Liberty, Missouri.

In over 44 years of living in this area, I've never heard a message like that one, even in the winter.

Maybe it's not storms they're worried about. Maybe it's really "cyberterrorism." Yeah, right.

This is like one of those families where Mom has a drinking problem, but all anyone says is "she's not feeling well..."

Liberty -

It has been playing at least twice a day on KOMO1000 for at least the last two weeks. We were commenting on it yesterday. Says somehting at the end about earthquakes and whatever other disaster may befall - be prepared and an 800 number to call for the FEMA booklet on how to prepare. By the way, KOMO 1000 is one of the civil defense stations (or what ever they call them now - they have been running that little test more frequently than I used to remember.)

This may be a subtle way for FEMA to see how many people will respond to their announcements and an indicator to see how many people are asleep and how many are going to prepare. In all my years, I've never seen nor heard FEMA give these announcements. Of course when there's an earthquake, we hear the usual stuff but that lasts only a couple of days. I sure hope my neighbors take advantage of it because I sure can't help them.

Just got a letter in the mail from our California State Senator urging people to "prepare now for Y2K." I'll see if he has a web-site, otherwise I'll re-type the letter and post it tomorrow morning.

I have noticed the same thing in my neck of the woods. Several times whatever was playing on the radio would just stop and then the digital "noise" (it is no longer a tone) would sound. It made me think that it might be for real this time and then the music would come back on after a brief announcement. Kinda weird.

I know this belongs on the prep site, but everyone should be buying salt for seasoning and whatnot. Buy extra, I'm sure it will have barter value. In addition, if the happy faces are right, you do not need Halite to salt your walkways. Regular table salt (in sufficient quantity) will do just fine. Yeah, if you're an idiot in applying it, you will kill some plants or grass if it doesn't snow again soon.
