I don't know what a prep group can do for me. I don't think it is a wise idea to join one because some may not be at the same level of preparation as I am. I really don't want anyone knowing where I live and what goodies I have stored. I don't even tell my neighbors anything. It is sad that we have to live like this, but I don't trust anyone. If anyone needs to know about preparing for a disaster, just go to FEMA, the Red Cross, the front of your telephone book, and the library. The internet is an endless place to get information, one only needs to seek out the goodies. If I want new friends I'll join the gardening club.

I am with you, green thumb.

I too think it would be a bad idea to even make contact, let alone hook up with any Y2K "preparedness" groups.

First, if Y2K IS a major deal, then you've got "loyalty to the group" versus "loyalty to you and yours". Problem with this is, what if the group gets kooky/dangerous/cultlike? Best to avoid the problem entirely. Don't make contact in the first place!!!

Second, lets say one or more people in the group are of the Will Continue midset that thinks lynching public officials -- murdering public officials -- would be a real funny event, suitable for a party. If they do anything violent, do you want to be associated with people like that -- part of their group -- with the authorities wondering what role you played? And your identity as a member of the "terrorist" group broadcast on your local news? Remember what happened to Tim Mcvigh's "friends" that didn't have anything to do with the truck bomb, but "sorta knew" about his intentions, but didn't rat him out?

Plus, both if Y2K is bad, or if Y2K is a BITR, do you want to be "known" to people who are waiting (even hoping) for TEOTWAWKI? Don't you think that there will be various "litmus test" as to the mindset the group considers "acceptable" -- political, social, religeous, ect?

What if you and the group agree on Y2K, but not politics or some other area? Would you then become an enemy, a "target" for your "crime" of thinking differently than the dominant monkey in the group thinks? Dissagree with the "lynch mob" here, and they will post that you too are on the to be hanged list! Just for not seeing things their way -- I know, I've dissented (in post) from the lynch mob mindset only to read post that the rope will be going around my neck too for my "crime" of not thinking the same way Will Continue and her sick in the head friends think -- on more than one occasion.

Would you want to be around when Will Continue and her fellow sickies kidnapp and murder some public servant, posing for pictures beside the corpse hanging from the tree? What do you think will be the reaction of the murderers when they see by your facial expressions that you don't approve? Hey, Will Continue and her kind will say, this branch is strong enough for another one! Grab 'em and string em up, too! The more the merrier!

Think it can't won't happen with the mentality of Will Continue and her kind? Think again -- while you still have a life to think with!

STAY AWAY FROM ANY TYPE OF SEPARATIST GROUP! OR you will come to wish you NEVER would have let them know your name!!!!

I started a web prep group.I have people from all over in it,yet we have local news ,world news, shopping sale tips for storage items, like foods, pails etc.Where the sales are and so on its working great.Advertizrd in the local papper to get the word out.I am prepared myself, but many are not and have no clue what to do ,where to start.Just being able to chat with other locals who are preparing is a blessing.I hope you seek out those local groups who maybe on the web,if anything to help others.

Maggie,

THanks for the link. I have some reservations about joining groups, but it's nice to have a list of resources on hand, in case I change my mind.

Anon,

Sounds like you must be fresh from a fight. I catch your drift, but am puzzled by your example. Will is hardly the wackiest gopher in the hole.

Cked the Az sites out and most SUCKED big time. The REY of Spain should ck out the NUDIST site in Az. No Rain so they do it in the dirt. Remember the old Indian saying.....DON'T SKYLINE YOURSELF.

Anon :

Did you have a near death experience with some string as a child? It's gonna be OK, honey.

"A world without string is chaos."

This thread is pretty doggone funny.

Relax and check out the group. You don't have to even give your real name unless you want to down the road. If you are worried about government plants, park a block away and walk over. Maybe it will be worth it, maybe not.

If anyone thinks that they can survive chaos and anarchy long term all on their itty bitty lonesome, they are probably in for an unpleasant surprise. I would rather use caution and discernment and hope to find even two or three trustworthy people to join ranks with if necessary.

Best wishes!

From: Y2K, ` la Carte by Dancr near Monterey, California

Thanks to the link in the original question to Community Groups for Survival and Y2K Awareness. I had not, to this point been aware of any groups in my area, and only of one person on this forum with whom I've exchanged a brief e-mail or two. I agree with the posters above about how important it is to be careful. For all we know, a group may have been started by, or stalked by someone who's collecting addresses to rob.

I wrote to one in my area and hope I hear back. Personally, I'm hoping to find some CSA farmers to support, and someone who may be selling shares in a fallback position, or a place where we could stash some stuff. It seems like this should be possible without being dragged through some huge ideological litmus test. Being of extreme independent spirit, it's unlikely I'd match up to a dogmatic group of any stripe.

I believe this is Bruce Beach's web site or a part of it. I checked out the listings in my area (only) some time back and the groups seem to come in all flavors from self-sufficent homestead types, christian related to survivalist (Y2k and beyond).

As usual, buyers beware. Some appeared to be genuine, while others I wouldn't even want to know my name.

Mumsie,

A very good point and I agree. However, I'm not so sure that a group of strangers is the way I want to go. I checked out the site to see if there were any organizations or individuals I might be familiar with forming groups in my area. There's not, but I have the link bookmarked so I can check back.

-- Bokonon (bok0non@my-Deja.com), August 31, 1999.

Good point Bokonon. I just hope people don't hole up and think that they don't need other. The risk involved is minimal if people exercise caution and discretion. Had to laugh at Bible study tonight when the speaker said, "Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean someone isn't following you!"

Wasn't it just in the news that Clinton bought this "for America"?

Seven fallout shelters....HMMMMM.

http://www.webpal.org/states/mt.htm

2. The Summit Lighthouse Survival Complex A very large RELIGIOUS survival complex (said to have 7 large Fallout Shelters), that we know very little about, is located on the Royal Teton Ranch at Corwin Springs near Livingston, Montana adjacent to Yellowstone National Park.

This facility was started by Elizabeth Clare Prophet and her husband Ed Francis. Today it is said to be administered by its President, Gilbert Cleirbaut, Corporate Planner, William Malek, and Financial Officer Ed Francis.

For more information you should search the web on the topics of Summit Lighthouse or Church Universal and Triumphant.
