Plumrose Canned Hams: where you can get

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

Having scoured No VA for this item without success, found in Sunday's paper yesterday that CVS Pharmacies were having a sale on them at $1.79 each. Whenever they have specials, unless you go early, they tend to run out (JIT inventory) and you get rain checks. Often the item does not reappear. So if you live where this sale is, get to it! They are 1 lb. cans for $1.79.

Wal Mart also carries nonrefrigerated canned hams. They have a very long shelf life.

bardou:

What you say is true. You can also buy dry cured hams [so called country cured] and they will last longer than you need to store them and taste a lot better than canned hams. Downside is they are big and must be kept intact to store.

Best wishes,

Just picked up canned hams at SAMS (Omaha, NE), three 1 lb cans per package, for $5.28. They are "Danish Crown" brand from Denmark, fully cooked, need no refridgeration until opened, and mine have exp. date of 0618-2004 (assuming sometime in 2004). SKU on receipt is 545836. Tried one last night. Not bad right out the can (ignore the gelatin), even better warmed (can be warmed in their own can after opening). Have been watching SAMS for last couple months, this is first time I've seen 'em there.

We found DAK Danish canned hams for $1.99 at Eckerd Drugs (unadvertised special)and 3/$5.79 at SAM's (diff. brand). I've been wondering about the Smithfield Virginia Smoked Hams I see at Wal-Mart (mentioned above). Once they are cut into, do they need to be refrigerated?

JillD:

I assume that you are referring to my post. Once they are cooked and cut they must be kept cold. Around here that is not a problem. The problem will be [until the end of March] keeping them from freezing solid.

Best,,,
