We're at 127 days and some company's systems programmer is asking for help converting  CYYDDD to MMDDYY.  But it's not a simple date
conversion that DD could write in COBOL, it's running as part of an IEF exit.

Seems to be a little late in the game.

I found the original post in the mainframe newsgroup, where the pollies have said, well, they're blase about Y2K.  Yes, some are, some aren't but Pollies don't have the technical background to see the problems.

For non mainframers or pollies, any system modifications should have been made 2 or more years ago and frozen.  You don't want to change the OS at the last minute.

Something as basic as CYY to YY windowing should not be a project at day 127.  It seems odd that this shop is converting CYY to YY and discarding the century indicator.  (IBM like tm_year, did it wrong with century indicators but that's another matter.)

While a polly might make a flippy motion with a hanky, the issue really is, this is Day 127, it was a question to a mainframe newsgroup.  Some kind of huge computer out there somewhere is at risk.

Sorry pollies, there are shops in worse shape.  Banks don't "get it". Wishing really, really hard does not make systems compliant.  Kosky single handedly sandbagged the whole country.

Hmmmmmmm. Who DOES Kosky work for anyway? Is there anyone in charge? What IS the Kahuna in Chief's intent? Is he stupid or smarter than his 'subjects'? Is this a mystery to be solved or do some of us simply find such a level of neglect and blantant disregard difficult to believe at the highest levels of our government?

I suppose it boils down to trust. That's a whole new set of questions, now isn't it........

Somehow, I don't see Koskinen's actions as "single handed." He has a LARGE critical infrastructure (and related industry/agency) Advisory Group... and a boss.

Yes, he's the maim mouthpiece for the happy face folks, but who's gonna be left standing to hold him and the rest of them accountable?

Sandman: Amish GI-Joes.

Kosky's job was as Cory so eloquently put it: "make a flippy motion with a hanky" and make Y2K disappear from Clinton's desk, plate and "to do" list. DOE made a flippy motion with a hanky and made electric reliability disappear from under its hat. Social Security made a flippy motion with a hanky and made caring for the elderly and disabled the responsibility of States and Local governments. CIAO made a flippy motion with a hanky and made the threat to our infrastructures NOT the technology problem, but people buying cans of beans at Costco.

Its been quite an entertaining magic show. But watch out for the big POOF! as the show draws to a close. The magicians disappear behind the curtain and it will only be then that the audience finds out the exits have been sealed.
