Where can we get potassium iodide to aid in radiation poisioning.

Potassium iodide ( 130mg dose)helps keep[ the thyroid from adsorbing radioactive iodine. Anyone know a good source. Drug store only has liquid form which requires pres. Capsule or pill or powder not regulated.

Rambo,

I just got mine. I do feel better now.

You can look up info at....www.medicalcorps.org/

They are fast, I sent them a check and had the potassium iodide in less than a week. They are not set up to take credit cards, so you have to send them a check.

Hope this helps.

PS.... I also got enough to give to our livestock. Having a milk cow doesnt do you alot of good if she is dead.

The stuff is cheap. Get enuff for stocking stuffers for your best friends Christmas. I too bought enuff for my 8 mimi donkeys and dog, cats and pet potbellied pig. Taz...who prays we never have to use it.

I think the Montana Militia sells it too.

Could someone explain to me the difference between potassium iodide and potassium iodate, and whether or not one is better than the other?

I just recieved mine (really pronto!) from Emergency Essentials

http://www.BePrepared.com

for $5.50 per full dose per person (I got 6 as I am having family stay with us thru the new year).

My understanding is that potassium iodine is bitter while potassium iodate is easier on the palate. Medical Corps listed above has the exact info on the differences. Hope this helps ;-)

Almost forgot, at Emergency Essentials it is called Thyro-Block

Hey there.

Swiss brand vitamins (may be Canadian, dunno) sells potassium/iodine for 3.95/90 tabs.

You could also try the ANBEX website. They distribute the stuff in the US, $10/2 wk. supply. Gary N. has a link to it, and he's also got a new search engine.

Note that a pound of KI is about 3500 doses, so since 1/2 a kilo is a bit over a pound so that's less than $0.05 a dose. See http://home.earthlink.net/~kenseger/surv/IODINE.TXT for details.

The Country Store at www.healthyharvest.com sells it for $18 per 100 tablets. And other good stuff. I wonder it will be of much help to animals that have much shorter lifespan then humans. In humans, the effect is to prevent cancer that shows up after several years. If your dog is ten years old, for instance, I wonder if it would live long enough to develop a cancer from radioactive iodine. Anyone know about this? We have 5 cats, ourselves, so I have been wondering about this. I usually give cats 1/10 the human dose. From what I hear, the potassium iodide is absolutely wretched to take if it is in a form you can taste. Such as a broken or crushed tablet. The worst thing you ever tasted and burns besides. Imagine giving that to a cat. Ouch! (Anybody seen the humor piece "How To Give A Cat A Pill"?) Anybody informed here? Shivani
