Unexpected Positive Backlash From The Navy Y2K Pentagon Papers? Thank You: Jim Lord AND The U.S. Navy!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

We many need to track this media phenomena this weekend, and coming week, but I suspect the Jim Lord Y2K Pentagon Papers internet and newsmedia firestorm may have some UNEXPECTED, positive results.

In fact, we may be poised to call a trend.

Its early yet, but it appears, that *many* companies and utilities, in their local media outlets, are rushing to come forward with Y2K compliance and readiness information as a response to the Navy Papers spotlight/fiasco in the national news.

This could be a good thing! Or not... if the locals continue with the white lies.

This links to a very impressive local community readiness story, which illustrates my point...

Miami Herald Y2K Article

http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=001Hjc

How many more of these articles will we see now, across the country, where counties and communities start to... tell it like it is? Both the Y2K ready and not ready?

Lessons to learn... Shift Happens... And.. Expect The Unexpected.

Aw heck, Im just gonna go ahead and say it... heres a big...

Thank You!

... to BOTH... Jim Lord AND the United States Navy!

Go Navy! (Et. al.)

;-D

You thank Jim Lord for posting his ridiculous Pentagon Papers scare?. He is to blame for the fiasco. It didnt help bring forth anything it just made alot of people more nervous for no reason.

Many of the companies announcing their compliance already did in web sites, mailings and public notices.

-- fiasco (fiasco@fiasco.com), August 22, 1999.

Sometimes a "fiasco" can trigger some much needed truth.

Yes, I thank them both.

Fact: The Navy documents were confirmed as "real" by no less than Koskinen.

Fact: We now have some "updated" documentation. (That may or may not be accurate).

Fact: Officials in local communities appear to be rushing to "strut" their Y2K stuff.

We will see... but yes, I think this may be an unexpected side- benefit.

Old fiasco is a real fiasco! Fiasco need to get it in his big skull, that this forum is only for us Y2K preparers!!! The pollys lurk here because of their ineficiencies and insecure feelings about Y2K!!

-- Y2K ready (Y2K@ready.com), August 22, 1999.

I do not trust the words compliant or ready. Why? Because at the end of every disclosure that is made is a big ol' fat disclaimer. You could argue that legally it has to be there. I believe we have become so accustomed to seeing that in the last 20 or so years, that we don't give much thought to it anymore. The fact is, this is all a company needs to legally get by even if they are lying through their teeth. Also, you probably would have noticed that whenever a statement is made it is couched with language , "confident" being an example, which forms another type of disclaimer.

-- Gia (laureltree7@hotmail.com), August 22, 1999.

I believe the only thing we will be hearing out of utilities and corporations is a reassurance that they are prepared and there's nothing to worry about. Problem is, there's millions of stupid people out there who will believe them and go about their business. We have seen disclaimers everywhere from utilities, corporations and government. So who is lying and why do the Pentagon Papers even exist? If millions of new GIs rush out today and start buying supplies, it would be catastrophic to the economy and banking. I don't believe the Pentagon Papers will have that big of effect on anyone. People are still asleep and will remain that way because that's just how some human beings are - hopelessly stupid.

-- bardou (bardou@baloney.com), August 22, 1999.

bardou, you may call them "hopelessly stupid", but I guarantee you they will have amazing memories with total recall when they pay their first visitations to our doors.

-- Randolph (dinosaur@williams-net.com), August 22, 1999.

I agree Randolph, and that's what's going to be the worse part. If you don't answer the door, they'll break in. If you answer the door you'll have to have shotgun in arms. If they don't leave, you'll have to take action. Something that probably none of us have ever experienced. I know that I can take care of myself and family and have prepared, but firing that first bullet is going to be the clencher.

Do read the... Miami Herald Y2K Article.

They spell out what is ready, AND, what is not. This is a valuable side-benefit of more utility awareness generated over the past few days. Hope it continues, and wish my area would be so "organized."

Several utilities listed by Lord as having problems were swamped with inquiries following Lord's posting, which was reported by The Associated Press. Florida Power & Light was "astonished" to find itself listed as likely to crash in Fort Lauderdale and other areas it serves, said Bill Swank, a company spokesman. In fact, the power plant in Fort Lauderdale had already had its computers rolled over to Year 2000 dates and is performing flawlessly, Swank said.

By now--with all of the reports that have gone out.

Two weeks ago----only three states [ready]!

Last week--Navy document--substantiated!!!

The term disconnect is the only thing that makes sense!!

"It just cannot happen to us"!

If a Senator or a President held a press conference and stated that their was even the SLIGHTEST chance of ANY disruption, People would prepare. So folks either there is not even the slightest chance of a disruption or Our leaders A. don't know or b. don't care

Nobody on board the Titanic ever believed the Titanic could sink from an iceberg until the ship was breaking up as it rode into the berg itself. Even then, folks didn't believe it was happening. So too with Y2K. It will probably remain as such for most until things start to actually break up.

Diane:

An excellent observation on your part! I had in my previous post to Ron been thinking more about my personal response to the papers, but in this thread you point out a much more important response-the industry and goverment and organizational awareness it may engender. Perhaps increased accountablility will ensue? that would make the whole thing worthwhile. I really didnt think this would make much of a splash off the net, but it apears to have done so the wayt he article mentions how the at risk power companies have been deluged with calls since last week. Thanks for pointing it out.

Another thought-a way to measure what effect the Lord papers may have had, at least among the regulars here-didnt we just do a survey here a few weeks ago, about the anticipated outcomes of Y2k? on the good ol' 1-10 scale? Wonder if the numbers have changed any since Pentagon Papers Thursday?
