Linda,

You aren't supposed to use these over a long period of time. Check the archieves, Also, think about buying an inexpensive filter, instead.

Mara, are you going to chance it New York, or are you planning to bug out before 2000? Personally I think NY is doomed.

The tablets I've seen say essentially not for extended use. Even then, some don't get all the bugs/cysts. Reverse osmosis/filtering etc. is for long term use (and a lot of the filters don't get everything either). Read labels carefully.

Linda ... Do what the Boy Scouts are taught; put one capfull of Clorax bleach in a gallon of water. It kills all the Protozoa ( the microscopic wiggly things that give diahrea/make you sick ). Eagle

Forget the tablets. Get a filter/purifier. Safewater is new on the market and has a sports bottle type of filter that is very nice. Around $40.00. Does 750 liters per filter. Easy to use, and no bleach needed, let along tablets. It's VERY easy to use.

Mara, check out a good pharmacy for Halazone tablets--if they don't have them check with a large sporting goods. Steps in emergency water treatment---try to get water from a moving stream, not down stream from a corporate polluter or nuc plant--some field expediant ways to purify or at least clean it. boil it first, a simple still can be made with a presto cooker with w/ 12 inches of stainless tubeing inserted into the pressure gauge fitting on the top, the steam is directed into a mason jar or simular glass container----NEVER boil in aluminium, only stainless or glass, and the water will recondense and is drinkable----1 cap of bleach per gallon after water cools and a few drops of iodine---let set and drink it up---the greatest danger is drinking fecal contaminated water "guardia" sp.?, charcoal briquets can be crushed and water passed through as another way to filter in an emergency filter thru a cotton sock and boil. Many cultures use crushed charcoal for treatment for diarrea, not tasty but helpful another vietnam trick to keep emergency meds cold is to seal insulin or like in a metal topped glass jar and put a pin hole in another simular jar and drip tiny drops of Gas from a few inches above on to the outside of the glass containing the items to cool----never inside or near open flame- you must wash container with soap and water before opening-we kept our brews cold in the jungle this way---ice actually forms on the outside----pick up some entrovioform tablets at the druggist these are a Godsend in the event of disintary I've personally drunk a canteen of rice paddy water W/ a halazone tablet added---a little non sugar koolaide made the wa-wa palatable and I avoided the trots---hope this helps---Merek of the Jungle (and I can still swing through the trees!

Y2K Ready,

No, I won't be in NYC. I'm be (at least) warm in Florida. But I have friends who are prepping here. I don't think all New Yorkers are essentially dangerous. The apartments are not unsafe--doors locked and all...
