New Y2K Documentary on PBS

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

It looks like the national media is finally starting to take notice of this issue. I saw today that PBS will be running an hour long program called "Millennium Factor: The Truth About Y2K" this month.

Our PBS guide says it is NETA supported and is available for free for schools and educators to tape. Maybe this thing will get seen in some school board/town hall meetings and get folks to pay more attention to Y2K.

There web site is at: http://www.millenniumfactor.com

Millennium Factor" begins airing on PBS Stations

The producers of "Millennium Factor, The Truth About Y2K" announced that the award winning documentary will begin airing on PBS affiliate stations beginning in late August.

Many of the PBS affiliate stations opted to pre-empt their schedules to include "Millennium Factor" when it became available in late July. Producer Theresa Bruno said, "It was very encouraging to see how many program directors thought it was important to get this on the air quickly. I think it also speaks to the need for better media coverage of this issue."

The producers also wished to acknowledge the role that Alabama Public Television played in making the documentary available for PBS. "They really took an active interest in seeing that this film reached the widest possible audience. Their support of local filmakers is greatly appreciated", said Mrs. Bruno.

That is the documentary directed by Les Rayburn.

REALITY CHECK REQUIRED:

1) The producers interviewed and extensively quote 7 of the 12 memebers of Mr. Koskinian's Commission. These aren't unbiased sources; just "lucky":

< The presidential panel

"The President (Bill Clinton) established a council on Y2K, and seven of the 12 experts on his council appear in the documentary," Stone says. "Hooper also appeared and was a great source of information."

Harper-Bruno says it was a stroke of luck that made some of Clinton's panelists available for this documentary. >>

2) Two of the producers were fired from CNN for their roles in the trumped up and utterly false "CIA - nerve gas used in Cambodia" story. Are they credible themselves to put out a reliable story?

<<"But, two of the producers on the Y2K project were part of the group that was fired because of the Vietnam story they did about the U.S. gassing our own men.">>

3) The producers were quoted as saying that what they found out discredits "fanatics" and "right-wingers" who forsee disaster. Now, just what do you think they will put in the report. What "key words and tricky phrases" will they use if they are already spewing hatred from the Clinton's administration?

<<"But, how prepared we are will make a historical impact and could change the way we live."

Trying to get the truth out

Rayburn adds, "There are mostly right-wing groups sensationalizing it and the hard-core survivalists. There's not a lot of credible (information) out there." >>

4) What issues has PBS covered accurately with respect to this administration - ever? What are the PBS prejudices? How reliable are they? Are they as unbiased as CBN?

On the "pro side" the producers did say that they are recommending "some preparations" - so evidently the story may not be completely taineted - however, Mr Koskinian is already saying to prepare too!

"What if computers malfunction and shut down our nation's railroads, which are totally automated? What if people panic and the banking system collapses? What if highly computerized FAA air-traffic control mechanisms shut down? What if government computers crash and no one receives Social Security and welfare checks? These are just some of the scenarios addressed in the documentary," she says.

"We want (viewers) to take from this a sense of caution. They need to look up and take notice but don't be afraid. Get together a little extra food, water and cash. And prepare for a neighbor, too. Not everyone will be prepared if something does happen." >>
