freezing problem with water purifiers

Has anyone researched into how serious of a problem freezing temperatures have on portable water purifiers like the Pur Scout. I know of one water purifier by Sweetwater which explicitly states that its water purifier is designed to withstand freezing temperatures without damage?

For winter backpacking filters can't be used because although they will survive freezing, they cannot be used that way for obvious reasons. I know that the PUR uses a paper filter that is known to tear under some types of stress. The best way to store it after use is to sleep with it in your sleeping bag. (along with your boots, other water bottles, fuel, and any clothes you are drying out. Buy the longest bag you can)
