IMO GPS is OT

The GPS rollover is soon (or already happening for all I know). Concern over Y2K is central to my life, so most would consider me a GI or a doomer even. But I have no worries about GPS. I expect postings in the next few days with a message along the lines of "The GPS problem was nothing serious, therefor Y2K problems will not be serious."

Anyone else expecting the same thing?

I expect nothing,after all,it's Y2K.

The conveniences and comforts of humanity in general will be linked up by one mechanism, which will produce comforts and conveniences beyond human imagination. But the smallest mistake will bring the whole mechanism to a certain collapse. In this way the end of the world will be brought about.

In other words, the GPS system, problems or no, is unrelated to Y2K, but it is intimately involved in the vast interconnectedness of our present industrial civilization. Which appears to be extremely vulnerable to Y2K-related disruptions.

(Isn't there some impressive word in German for "interconnectedness"?)

GPS and Y2K are related only in that they are both problems which can occur from one machine not being able to interpret data from another. So it's wrong to say that GPS Rollover has nothing to do with Y2K. If nothing happens, it does say that not every potential problem turns into a real problem, no matter how favorable the odds.

On the other hand, just because nothing has happened yet, from GPS Rollover, doesn't mean it's time to sound the all clear. Both GPS and Y2K can result in problems that don't manifest themselves immediately. All we can say for sure now is that we are unlikely to have a particular moment, when everything will fail all at once...it doesn't say there will be no problems.
