Jane Bryant Quinn article... the worst I've seen in a while

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

In today's Louisville Courier-Journal the headline for Jane Bryant Quinn's column was, "With Y2K under control in the U.S., think party and profit." The column starts out, "For the most part, American companies are ready for Y2K. So says the Merrill Lynch brokerage firm in a report on worldwide preparation... New Year's Day should be just another Saturday for corporate America. A June test of 34 of the world's largest payment systems, which handle trillions of dollars daily, went off with no errors." She mentions that other countries may be at risk, and there is concern about scare stories in the press causing year-end panic. "In the United States, the major risk is fear. Based on no evidence at all, large numbers of people expect ATMs to freeze, checks to bounce and banks to fail. That's not going to happen." She mentions millennium loonies expecting America to go dark and buying generators, food, and survival gear, and says to let them spread their money to people who sell this stuff. Y2K might even bring some financial benefits, such as economic growth from companies stockpiling (followed by a modest slowdown while they work off those inventories), US markets getting money that's fleeing turmoil in other countries, and international mutual funds at bargain prices. She ends by saying there will be no champaigne shortage as was previously feared. "Let the millennium loonies pour their water into their dried spinach. The rest of the country is going to party."

It just amazes me.

Why do people who are CLEARLY against preparation, think we'll be somehow unable to live like they do? we've got EVERYTHING they've got, just more!

In fact, most people have said that if y2k is just a bitr, they'll donate the food to food banks.

If this stupid lady from the louisville whatever can buy food and party, F*CKIN duh!, we can too!

ONLY WAY YOU LOOSE IS NOT BEING PREPARED. THAT'S IT.

only way you take a RISK is to not prepare.

NO RISK in preparing. Nothing happens, food bank, or eat. something happens, you're prepared.

maybe this paper is just trying to make money by coming up with an Obviously ridiculious viewpoint....

There will be some joy in the new year afterall, thinking that maybe all she will have to eat is crow.

Borrowing a Dan Akroyd expression from the old Saturday Night Live shows, I would respond:

Jane, you ignorant slut!

This kind of unsubstantiated trash flowing from her stupid fat mouth is probably the result of one of the following:

1. She's sleeping with the enemy

2. She's being paid a lot of money to lay the BS on heavy

3. She's has nothing but cheese between her ears

She says despite there being no evidence cause she hasn't looked.HAs she done the research? NO. She is simply accepting the information she reads in the papers, where no one else has researched these topics, either. But, don't worry, the public, those who haven't done any research, that is, will accept it.

Jane Bryant Quinn being used as a spokesperson for Merrill Lynch. Abby Joseph Cohen being used as a spokesperson for Goldman Sachs. Both saying eat, drink, invest, and be merry, for the future is rosy, rosy, rosy. It is indeed a tough and lonely road for poor old Dr. Ed Yardeni. But I still stick with *him*.

You sure are hard on Martha Quinns' stepmom. I thought all opinions were welcome now that the loonies have their own board. Hey Squire, how about a link so we can decide for ourselves what the ignorant slut actually said.

OK. Cross Ms. Quinn off my list of potential Y2K opinion leaders. Kinda makes you wonder how well she researches the rest of her financial advice, doesn't it?
