Moderate earthquake strikes rural Montana area

LOS ANGELES, Aug 20 (Reuters) - An earthquake measuring an estimated 5.3 on the Richter scale rattled a rural section of Montana on Friday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.

John Bellini, a geophysicist at the USGS National Earthquake Information Center in Colorado, said the quake hit at 7:50 a.m. (0950 EDT, 1350 GMT) northwest of the town of Lima, or about 120 miles (190 km) southwest of Helena.

"It's a fairly rural area, and the quake was moderate. But we don't have word yet on whether there was any damage," he said.

Now as Christ sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, "...What will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?" And Jesus answered and said to them, "...There will be... earthquakes in various places." (Matt. 24:3, 7)

According to the current seismic event listing there has been two 5.3 earthquakes in Eastern Idaho also. www.iris.washington.edu/cgi-bin/seismon_events.pl?date=99/07/22&lat=3...

I can't say that you guys are right or wrong but there are earthquakes happening all the time. It's the nature of our home planet. It doesn't necessarily mean anything as big as TEOTW

-- (rcarver@inacom.com), August 20, 1999.

Let's put this fallacy that we are experiencing more, and much more severe earthquakes than ever before, to rest...........

It's pure crap propogated by those that would twist and distort Biblical teaching to further their agenda...........

LONDON (Reuters) - Following is a list of the biggest earthquakes by magnitude with 1,000 or more deaths from 1900 as measured by the U.S. Geological Survey. All figures are best estimates.

YEAR COUNTRY MAGNITUDE DEATHS

1960 Chile 9.5 4-5,000

1906 Colombia 8.9 1,000

1933 SANRIKU, Japan 8.9 2,990

1950 India/Assam/Tibet 8.7 1,530

1905 KANGRA, India 8.6 19,000

1906 SANTIAGO, Chile 8.6 20,000

1920 GANSU, China 8.6 200,000

1946 TONANKAI, Japan 8.4 1,330

1934 India/Nepal 8.4 10,700

1923 Japan 8.3 143,000

1927 XINING, China 8.3 200,000

1939 CHILLAN, Chile 8.3 28,000

1944 TONANKAI, Japan 8.3 1,000

1907 Central Asia 8.1 12,000

1985 MICHOACAN, Mexico 8.1 9,500

-----------------

As you can clearly see, of the 15 earthquakes with the greatest magnitude only 2 of them were in the 1951-1999 period with 13 being in the 1900-1950 period. Only 1 of them has occured in the last 38 years for heavens sake.....

However, these pseudo-scholars continue to ramble on how they are much worse today than ever before........

The TRUTH is, they have been LESS severe in the last half of this century than the first half

So 4 earthquakes made the news in the last 3 days......there is nothing unusual about that! Earthquakes often have tragic results as seen in Turkey this week.......however they have always had tragic results and from even before the time of Christ we have had them!

As long as we continue to build sub-standard buildings on top of fault lines, we cannot expect any less than these large scale disasters....

Acclaiming these though, as a new 'sign of the times' is simply wrong. Continued spreading of falsehoods once they know they are indeed false, is not only wrong but also has another name.....LYING!!

Craig,

You get way too worked up about this stuff.

You wrote,

"The TRUTH is, they have been LESS severe in the last half of this century than the first half "

And you think this is a good thing, right? It's exactly the opposite.

You feel tension right? When you read threads like this your blood pressure rises, right? Pressure. Tension. What you've shown here is that you know nothing about the nature of earthquakes or "earthquake swarms."

Do a little research before you go ballistic.

Michael........

Go soak your head.......your logic goes in circles here.

I was correcting the ongoing fallacy amongst these folks that earthquakes have been more severe in the last few years which is their evidence of 'fulfilled prophecy'. I correctly pointed out that this was not true......why is it when anyone takes an opposing opinion to the doomer mentallity you fly off into the insult mentality?

I am well aware how earthquakes work Michael. Of course based on your argument about this, the 'signs-of-the-times-earthquake-gurus' should rather be using the argument that the lack of earthquakes is a sign of the times because it shows that the pressure is building up for the BIG ONE.

The way you reason it, I am wrong whatever I say! If I say the severity of earthquakes is actually down, you criticize me because you say it is building up for the big one. If I say the severity is up, you say that it is proof that 'prophecy' is being fulfilled and therefore I am still wrong!

Let's just have a little fairness please........

My point was straight-forward and accurate: Those that claim we are currently seeing an increase in the severity and frequency of earthquakes as 'prophesied' in the Bible, are WRONG. I showed the facts to back up my statement.

There's really no need to shit all over me for not only stating my opinion, but also backing it up with hard facts.

excuuuuuuuuuse me craig, there seems to be something missing in your list--how about the last 38 years????!!! i saw a list of all time biggies and they were all the way up to the present and included some very big ones. sorry i don't know how to hotlink--but check this site out. it isn't the one i originally saw but has a more "current" list than yours. are you telling half truths, like the government?

Craig,

First of all, I don't think "the biggest earthquakes by magnitude with 1,000 or more deaths from 1900" was the topic. But regarding FREQUENCY of earthquakes, statistics from the National Geophysical Data Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration show that earthquakes have generally increased in frequency in this century.

The following statistics record the frequency of significant worldwide earthquakes (magnitude 6.0-9.9) for each decade of this century:
1901-1910 - 138
1911-1920 - 110
1921-1930 - 92
1931-1940 - 103
1941-1950 - 121
1951-1960 - 118
1961-1970 - 142
1971-1980 - 170
1981-1990 - 170
1991-1994 - 67 (only 4 years worth of data available; extrapolating from this figure, about 168 would be expected for the decade)

From the low point in the 1920's, earthquake frequency has increased over 80% to the present.

Since the NOAA data was incomplete for the 1990's, I used another database (U.S. Geological Survey) for comparison figures for the last two decades. Here are the results for 6.0-9.9 magnitude earthquakes, including those which occurred deep within the earth:

1981-1990 - 1,093
1991-1999 (through 8/18/99) - 1,317

Although a year and a quarter short of the prior decade, the frequency of earthquakes in the 90's has increased over 20%.

Craig wrote,

"Go soak your head"

You sure do get worked up about this. Why do you feel the need to attack people here?

If I offended you with my previous post, I'm sorry, it wasn't my intent. Do you really feel such flames are necessary?

By the way, my point about pressure and tension was meant to suggest that when a quake occurs it releases tension and pressure. However, when one quake occurs it may affect other plates which also have built up pressure and tension. Thus, more quakes. Not even science can prove or disprove this right now. I don't remember posting anything about Bible prophecy or any other prophecy with regard to the Montana earthquake.

Anyway, currently earthquake science isn't perfect, and regardless of whether or not the quakes are related it does "seem" as if there have been more larger magnitude quakes lately than what is "normal" doesn't it?

Regardless, and this is coming from "Mike, one of the part time volunteer moderators", you should try to be a little more tolerant of views other than your own. Everyone here has a right to their own beliefs and the opportunity to share them.

Even the mainstream News is now saying likely at least 40,000 perished in Turkey's earthquake. Go look at MSNBC. That's a lot of people to be crushed to death within seconds, the rest to slowly die of heat, thirst, terror, and pain buried alive. Not to mention the prolonged agony of millions left in the destroyed country, without homes or infrastructure.

Earthquakes deserve much more coverage than they receive.

Quake Rattles Western Japan; No Injuries Reported

Updated 9:49 PM ET August 20, 1999TOKYO (Reuters) - A wide part of western Japan was jolted by a moderately strong earthquake Saturday morning but there were no immediate reports of injury or damage, police officials said.

The quake registered 5.5 on the Richter scale and was strong enough to cause minor structural damage to buildings such as cracking walls or damaging window panes, the Meteorological Agency said.

The quake hit at 5:33 a.m. and was strongest in the western Japan prefectures of Nara and Wakayama. It could be felt as far away as Tokyo, 250 miles to the north-east and Yamaguchi Prefecture, 340 miles to the south-west, it said.

Craig is determined to prove his theory that "the end of times" is already past with the passing of 70 A.D. He feels he has to disprove anything that might indicate his theory isn't correct. He refuses to look at the possibility of anything else. Why? It didn't happen when he thought it should happen....it's called a temper tantrum ! He's mad at God. Anybody know what normally happens when someone has a temper tantrum???? HMMMMMMMMM ......Anybody seen that billboard I keep seeing on the highway:

" DON'T MAKE ME COME DOWN THERE!"
