Sleeping Bear on Rock

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

Sleeping brown bear at Katmai NP, July 1999.

Image taken on Velvia with Minolta 800si with 80-200/2.8 zoom at 200mm. Exposure 750/2.8.

I know the image is not perfect (bad lighting, branch behind bear) but I still enjoy it. A sort of love/hate relationship I guess.

This is my first post so I am open to all suggestions about the scan (too light/too dark), composition, etc.

Thanks for any replies.

Rodney,

Images are as much about composition as exposure. I like this bear shot because it shows perosonality.

As far as the technical side the image seems perfectly exposed and scanned to me except that it doesn't appear to be very sharp. Whatever the case I like the image and don't think those tree branches are a problem at all.

rodney, i think that the image could be improved by cropping it so that the bear's head is a little to the left looking into the frame. There also appears to be a rock behind the bear's head right in line with his mouth. Nothing you can do about that now.
