After reading what the State Auditor of Mississippi found on this thread, I cannot supress a few shudders at the realization that this is likely the state of affairs in most places. His report has the ring of truth to it and Horatio's and Hamlet's words seem eerily appropriate.

Mississippi is pretty far from the center of the universe, but as Robert Cook points out, much of our energy infrastructure is dependent on its continued functioning.

Having no inside knowledge of Mississippi politics whatsoever, I can only speculate that the Auditor sees some political gain in revealing the state of affairs there and while there is really no more justification to believe a politician when you agree with him than when you don't, this report is inflamatory enough that it cannot be ignored. The implications are pretty grim.

The MCI/Board of Trade debacle is another sign of the times. Regardless of the cause, it does illustrate our social vulnerability to infrastructure failure.

The earthquake in Turkey, standing alone, is a tragic disaster. What would it be without a functioning civilization in the rest of the world to send assistance?

Bankers advising the clergy on subject matter and opinion? Surely this cannot be! Mister Decker has assured us that the bankers are not afraid. . .

The stock markets continue to expand. When will the fabric give way and leave the financial world in tatters? Some would have us believe that the cloth containing the markets arrived in a small rocket from the planet Krypton and was left over from Superman's clothing. . .

As a Mississippi native and Editor of y2ktoday, I can tell you that Mississippi actually started addressing their Y2K problems relatively early (I say relatively). And, despite it being a poor state, Jackson (the capital and my hometown) is one of the South's major telecom hubs (MCI Worldcom, Skytel). So for them to announce now that they expect problems does not bode well for state governments in general.

(1) Is there anyone from Mississippi on this forum who isn't planning to prepare? See, the article may do some good...

(2) Hawaii may not be quite as far back (it was listed in bottom 9 states), but I'm not taking any bets at all that it will be ready.

(3) When push comes to shove, it is local preparations that will make the difference locally...especially if the larger governmental units fail to prepare.
