greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Just watched the evening news on NBC . the story was about the Feds printing more money and blah blah blah... The reporter stated that even though "the banks had solved their computer problems long ago" some people were still worried about blah blah yada yada yada.HOW HAS NBC DETERMINED THAT THE BANKS HAD SOLVED THEIR PROBLEMS "LONG AGO" and why haven't they told the rest of us so that we won't be concerned? Oh, perhaps they asked the the bank president and he said "yes, we're ready"! Investigative reporting at its best!!! HOW DARE THEY STAND THERE ON NATIONAL TV AND TELL US STRAIGHT UP THAT THE BANKS ARE OK. We should demand that NBC tell us where the got their information. Because many people rely on th e networks as gospel Grrrr.

I'd talked about this on another board....

The media tells people what to think, and they will think it. don't be surprised if by december, EVERY industry, except like the post-it note factory down the street and the rock polishing shop downtown, mysteriously has "solved it's y2k problems LONG ago".

if Stone Phillips says it, it must be true.....

The media has more power than a 1000 internet reports about lack of readiness.

Somebody's gonna have to Die as a direct result of y2k, before people wake up. and even then, only SOME people will wake up.

I'm a journalist and researcher and one evening was incensed to find a doctor/consultant on one of the networks giving medical advice--she was entitled,I guess--contrary to the most recent studies. I was furious, both called the network, at which time the person who answered the phone tried to argue the medicine with me, and sent an email, to which I never received a response. As long as people buy it, why should they have the facts?

I saw the same clip, now how do you feel about editorial anonymity? multible choice question: A) the network and the reporter have studied the Y2K phenomenon and are qualified to ask questions. B) the sole purpose of the station is to provide accurate trustworthy information to the public. C)as per the Federal Broadcasting commission at no time will this network or any other sacrifice the truth or any part of the truth for personal gain. D) The banks that control big business in this country have the power to have the media say only what the bank wants them to say even if the management of the network knew it to be a lie. Now if you saw this clip tonight which one choice would you pick?? A-B-C or D If you said D , congratulations, your a realest. If however you picked a-b-c, those are all true in the fantasy world that the Polys live in.

Did I hear the reporter say that all the bugs were fixed a long time ago? Where am I in Russia?

And that bank official trying to tell people how stupid they are for taking their money out of the bank......Don't we know we could be robbed. PLleeaasssssseeeee. I'll do what I want thank you. After all, I'm being robbed by the bankers every month when I pay my mortgage and they take 80 % interest. Talk about being robbed.

A link on North's site says that a bank run has already started in Wisconsin.

Well, must say I am relieved... its NOT a Y2K problem... its a PEOPLE PROBLEM... according to the CBS interviewed bankers.

*Sigh*

It WAS a lame story.

The increasing number of media pronouncements that the banks are among the most y2k bug proof systems in the world is in my opinion a measure of the incontinence of Federal Reserve, the Treasury Department and the rest of the federal government. It's my perception that most of the media no longer investigates stories or even has the resources or will or motivation to investigate stories. What they usually do, therefore, is regurgitate press releases from "authoritative sources", eg the federal government and the Federal Reserve. Unfortunately, the latter and individuals within them have vested interests in maintaining the mindset that there is nothing in particular to worry about wrt the banking system. Due to fractional banking practices, there is plenty to worry about if people wake up, so the message from the banking industry and whoever they might control is not to worry. Repition amounts to neuro linguistic programming to the effect that anyone who states that Y2k and in particular Y2k in regards to banking is a problem is inherently not to be believed. Politically correct NLP is the major function of modern media. (Now please excuse me, I think I need a change of underwear...)
