Information about Canon EOS Rebel X

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Camera Equipment : One Thread

I hv a russian full manual focus camera and I am using it for 3 years for hobby photography and I am very happy abt it. I wanted to get a P&S zoom camera (around $200 worth) and went to a shop. But there I found a Canon SLR rebel X model and they are giving it for $225 with 28-80mm Zoom Lense and I am thinking of buying it. I want to know the feedbacks from the rebel X users Also is it possible to manual focuss with this camera. how is the lense quality and is the price okay ? I need to use it only for tour photography and Interior casual photos.

Please let me know the feedbacks

The Rebel X is three generations or so old. $225 US seems a little high. You may want to check on eBay, or in the photo.net classifieds to find a better deal.

It's not a bad camera - essentially a P&S with some flexibility. It does allow manual exposure control (manual focusing is set on the lens for EOS). Can't speak to the 28-80 quality; the 35-80 they used to sell with the XS was a decent enough lens - light and plastic, but decent photos, better than a typical P&S. Takes all the Canon EF lenses. The Rebel X, however, doesn't have a built-in flash; the XS does.

$225 is a fairly good price in a camera store. Still you can beat the price on Ebay or Photo.net by a bit. The Rebel is a decent SLR and the 28-80 is adequate.

The advantages over a P&S are: manual control when you need it and you can upgrade the lens or use a different length when you need to. The 28-80 f:4-5.6 is wider and faster than most P&S's too. Definitely an advantage when indoors.

The down side is: No flash on this model and bigger camera and lens to pack around. You have to ask yourself if you will be willing to carry it to the places you were going to take the P&S. If you will, the Rebel is a much better option.

I have bought a Rebel X for £179, in the UK. It is a good camera, functions fine and takes beautiful shots. Its down side is that it is quite heavy but compare it to the other models in the EOS range and the Minolta Dynax range and it is okay. I have used mine for shots that have made me quite a bit of cash, $225 is a good price. Top advice though - buy the Speedlight 200E flash with it and that should give you a nice versatile outfit.
