Our telephone company ( a small local independent) sent out their monthy circular. It informed us that they had "a y2k problem, and it was taking more time to fix than they had anticipated. AND....there was a good chance it wouldn't be fixed by the end of the year so we needed to PREPARE! "

good idea! Maybe I should call and ask! However, many of the neighbors had meeting last night to discuss CB's etc for communication. We are pretty far away from each other and thought it might be handy. Deep cycle batteries and CB's hottest topic of conversation around here!

DM, I live in east-central Indiana. GTE is the big dog here. They haven't said anything at all, as far as I know.

Does your bank use the same phone company? It would be very interesting to hear what they have to say. Who supplies your power? It's probably not local, so that might be ok. But I suspect the the electric people depend on user reports of outages to help pinpoint the source of distribution problems. W/o a phone, it makes it hard to let them know.

Sorta makes calling any emergency help hard too, doesn't it?? Hmmm, one leg of the 'iron triangle' missing makes it hard to balance the remaining two. Good luck, fellow Hoosier.

A bit of advice from a fellow Hoosier: Those communication radios that use the new Family Service frequency are about as useful as opening the window and yelling to the person you wish to contact.

I was running fast this morning and just posted on the fly. The company is clay county rural telephone. Since we live in the boonies and have one address, another county and a phone from a totally different area , it is difficult to assess who is on what. I do think our bank is probably on CCRTC. GTE is another big one close by but it doesn't have anything to do with ccrtc.

As far as walkie talkie type things we have to many hills....ummm..craters, gorges, etc for them to work around here. I can't even get the cellular to work. Shows no service.

Will keep you posted on any new info. Needless to say my mind was working overtime today trying to take in the ramifications.
