Thai Govt Not Y2K Ready By Piyanart Srivalo, The Nation. August 15, 1999

About 35 percent of government agencies have made no progress in tackling the Y2K computer bug, Deputy Prime Minister Trairong Suwankhiri said yesterday.

Trairong, who heads the committee overseeing the implementation of fixes for the bug among government agencies, said he had instructed the agencies which were not prepared to report back to him in 15 days on their plan to tackle the problem.

Trairong said 65 percent of 231 government agencies which use computers in their main tasks have reported that they had fixed the bug.

The deputy prime minister said the remaining agencies needed to be rushed into overcoming the problem because the government will have to report the progress to international agencies.

Trairong said the Defence Ministry was also slow in preparing their systems to meet Year 2000 and he had asked the Air Force to make a report on their weapons which are controlled by computers.

According to a press release, the Cabinet was informed yesterday by Trairong that most of the government agencies which are classified in the top priority for fixing the Y2K bug have made their systems compliant.

However, the overall situation in the country is still considered "worrying" as several other government agencies and some private companies are still slow in solving the problem, the release said.

The Cabinet was informed that the progress in beating the Y2K bug is an indication of trust among international communities toward a country, so the government should monitor and ensure that private companies fix their systems in time for Year 2000.

Trairong's committee also suggested that the budget for tackling the Y2K bug be approved under special procedures so that government agencies receive the money in time to solve the problem.

The last paragraph says it all.
