States y2k prepared

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Did anybody, outside the DFW area, hear a report that the states are NOT Y2K prepared. Just curious. The report lasted all of 15 seconds. Stated that only 3 states were "ready". I think they were Ohio, North dakota and Nabraska, I think. Like I said, I only half listened. It was on WFAA in the DFW area.

Wups, you heard correctly. It was reported both in the daily rag here (Sacramento) and over the TeeVee news. Both media venues have treated Y2K very lightly in the past, but last night they started to sound a bit "doomish". Especially since California is not on the short list (no surprise there).

Nobody connected the dots to describe what loss of state services might mean to "the man in the street", but the news was presented rather gravely, and with a reminder that the state is working hard on the problem. I wonder if we are due for a locally-produced Y2K special, soon.

I might as well post this link again, too, while I'm at it:

Go into the archives under 'Government' and pull up 'State Patrol reports warrants lost due to Y2K bug'. This happened in July. I'm curious about when the information was collected for the current GAO report that informs us of Nebraska's compliance. Does anyone know?

I live in Ohio and the only thing I've heard about any y2k preparations on a government level, is that the Governor (Bob Taft) has a bunker 8 miles N.E. of downtown Columbus. I guess the rest of us in Ohio are on our own.

When they're done with their hardened fortified stocked Bunker, then the State grins in smug relief and announces "We're Y2K Ready."

The link states Iowa, Nebraska and North dakota are Y2K ready. The last I read Ohio has about 70% of Y2K project complete.

As a resident of one of those states which are in the bottom nine (Hawaii), I cheer on those who "are ready" but am somewhat worried about the rest of us. Yes, I know that a lot of work has been done, but the old 90-90 rule keeps coming to mind:

"The first 90% of the project takes 90% of the time. The last 10% of the project also takes 90% of the time."

I've seen nothing new on Hawaii since the June 30 posting on the state Y2K web site. But I'm sure that they are "working on it."

ohio is listed both in the bottom 9 and as one of the compliant 3. huh?

ohio is listed both in the bottom 9 and as one of the compliant 3. huh?

Maybe they mean Bob Taft's bunker is the third most compliant?
