Stink Bug on Sunflower

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

This is one of my earlier nature photos. I took it with my F90x and a Nikon 60mm micro lens (a great lens, but not enough working distance, so I traded it in on a 200 micro.) I call iit one from my artisitic bug series. If I were to do anything different today, I would have added some depth of field to get the outline of the bug in focus. Otherwise, it has always been one of my favorites. But, don't let that hold you back, I want to know what you think, good or bad! Donna

I think it's really great, the colors, DOF and exposure work very well together. Only thing I can think of is to have taken it as more of a side profile than a forward.

You seem to have a knack for getting nice saturated colors, that alone makes for pleasant viewing. Looks like one of those "almost" kind of shots. As you realize if that little stinkers body was focused, you would have had a nice sharp outline to draw your eyes to, and that beautiful soft focused saturated background to ice the cake. Look forward to seeing more.

Great. Again a picture with wonderful colous. I think the DOF is great, first you look at the bug and then at the flower and background. Maybe crop to the right so there is more balance and the bug is less centered?

Donna, This is SUPER. My comments mirror the rest except I disagree with the doing it as a horiz. It works as a vertical + an editor would love this and I think you should submit it.

Jeff stole my response - I'd like to see this as a vertical comnposition to draw more of the flower in, and to follow the bug's line. Also agree that you could submit this. It's well done, and a picture I probably would've passed on before seeing.
