Island Officials May Try to Block Militia on Saturday - Emergency Strategy Meeting by Township Held - Echoes from Ruby Ridge and Waco heard

Bois Blanc Island, MI (August 12) - An emergency meeting of the Bois Blanc Township board was called today to plan a strategy to deal with the Northern Michigan Regional Militia. Graham Whipple, Sheriff of Bois Blanc Island attended. What started as a show of support to a beleagured family may be taking on a more ominous and frightening spectre. The militia is determined to stand with Michael and Christine Stitt and their six children in opposition to a Township Board and the County that is waging a war of persecution against them.

On Saturday, August 14, the militia will attempt to assemble on the Stitt's property. Last week, the commander, Norman Olson and chief of staff, Ray Southwell went to the island to measure the severity of the problem and the potential for confrontation. Olson said in a press release Thursday, "I can tell you that this situation is becoming frightenly like Waco and Ruby Ridge. We have a family being driven into the ground by a vindictive and hateful government body. The family is determined to stand their ground. They have no choice, no where to go, no one to help. The court and deceitful lawyers have forced this family into a corner. If they comply and dispose of all their animals and garden, they place their children at great risk. If they refuse to comply they will be arrested and jailed for contempt and possibly lose their children. They've asked me for help. I can't say no.

The battlelines are forming and escalation may result in another armed standoff...this time with well trained militia defending a helpless family. I'm deeply troubled that this little matter might turn into another Waco or Ruby ridge. It starts like that, you know, and before we can stop it, it takes on its own energy. In the aftermath, we analyze where the mistakes were made and we vow to prevent it from happening again. Well, it is happening and I'm trying to stop it."

The problem has a simple solution, but the township board refuses to negotiate with Olson who offered to withdraw the militia if a 1-year variance or waver is granted to the Stitts to keep their animals and buildings and garden on their 37-acre property on Bois Blanc Island near Mackinaw. "Is it too much to ask that a frightened family be given one year to ride out Y2K? Is it too much to ask that the children be told they can stay and that mom and dad are not criminals? Is a township board so insensitive that it cannot understand that people are frightened about Y2K and the animals and garden are the means ofpreparation to survive?"

On Saturday, the militia will go to Bois Blanc Island. No one knows what to expect between now and October 7, the deadline imposed by the District Court of Mackinaw County. Olson said late Thursday night, "I pray that Waco and Ruby Ridge are far behind us, but I fear that cold unfeeling and corrupted government bureaucrats are everywhere. First it was Idaho, then Texas. Let the record show that I have tried to offer a fair and rational solution. Failing that, the next American nightmare may come to Michigan.

End Press Release

Mary:

I know about the N. Mi. Militia. I don't really trust their opinion on anything [lived there for a while]. I would like to see more informaton on the subject from a more reliable source. Thank you for the information

Best wishes,

Well -- Z1X4Y7, tell us what you know about the Northern Michigan Militia.

Ray

yes please I posted that request on another thread please tell us about the Michigan militia.

-- Johnny (JLJTM@BELLSOUTH.NET), August 14, 1999.

can we find the e-mail addresses of the above named officials?

Put pressure from the state and federal level on this issue.

Maybe a local(Michigan) blitz of coverage in papers and other media. Put the local officials on the defensive hotseat - they will get off.

The solution to this sort of crap can be found in the book "Unintended Consequences" by John Ross. (do a search on Amazon Books or Loompanics -- http://www.amazon.com or http://www.loompanics.com)

Hey you people, The Stitts went against ordinances when they put up those buildings and acquired animals. This was a NO NO. What is the big deal with you idiots?? This family was wrong.

-- WAKE UP (WhataCrock@getreal.com), August 14, 1999.

I read in a previous post something about in the past they had been charged with child abuse. Would anyone know more details on this point? It is hard for me to get behind anyone who was charged with child abuse. Could someone clear this up for me please.

-- a mom (what@mean.com), August 14, 1999.

It seems to me that several people on this forum have decided to meddle where they have no business. This is the Stitt's family's problem with their county officials. It might be a good idea to hear both sides before jumping on your horses and riding off in all directions at once.

-- gilda (jess@listbot.com), August 14, 1999.

a mom -- if you don't know anyone who has been accused of child abuse, just wait a while. The accusation rate is unbelievable. Anyone can call in any nonsense to the authorities (anonymously). Feuding family members, irate neighbors, nosy strangers can make your life a living hell. Children have been taken for no reason at all by social workers who make a living increasing their case loads. Then they scream for more money because their caseloads are so heavy.

SO-TRUE JOHN,all it takes is a lying-phone call [no-fact,s] & they come like the gestapo.your GUILTY..........

-- been-there. (dogs@zianet.com), August 14, 1999.

Yep,,,,,still waiting for all that info on the Michigan Militia.

Yawn...........

BTW, more child molesters? I thought Clinton made that legal..

-- R. Wright (blaklodg@hotmail.com), August 14, 1999.

if the stitts believe that they are being discriminated against, on the basis of religion, then they should call the following for help ASAP. 1. american civil liberties union 2. attorney-general for the state of michigan 3. ombudsman for michigan (i assume there is one) 4. mennonite church (or others) experienced in mediation. 5. others

Wake Up -- you are a fascist idiot -- precisely one of the big reason this country is going down the tubes -- Y2K or not. No one's fricking business what kind of buildings or livestock you put on your land. Now I can hear you "bleat" (you sheep) 'what about my property values'. Your neighbor has no obligation to protect YOUR property values. As far as pollution, if your big brother government, which you so obviously suck up to, hadn't gutted tort actions in that area, there would be remedies. Zoning laws were one of the first steps to establishing fascism in this country. (Fascism includes nominal private ownership, but actual government control of property. As opposed to socialism/communism where the government owns everything and their is no pretense to private ownership. What you regard as socialistic states or welfare states are generally simply fascistic. All made possible by blathering, bleating sheep like you.

Another g**d** idiot. What does raising a barn have to do with child abuse? "Oh, oh, save the save children, sob, sniffle, boo-hoo." Barf. All any tyrant or vindictive spouse has to do is to raise the spectre of "child abuse" and all you idiot bleeding hearts pass your brains out your butts.

From: Y2K, ` la Carte by Dancr near Monterey, California

Ideas along the lines of those expressed in Carla Emery's Open Letter to President Clinton would go a long way toward lessening the current pressure on the Stitt Family. This kind of declaration would also help the millions of families (like mine) in gated communities with codes, covenants and restrictions.

It's hard to fault this family for the preparations themselves. Instead of "hoarding" they determined to become self-sufficient.

I cannot imagine, though, how the federal administration could politically make a declaration like this fly. It would not mesh very well with the three day emergency story. Perhaps locally, though, the State of Michigan, or Mackinac County could be persuaded to issue a broad moratorium on zoning enforcement against agricultural offences.

Asking Bill Clinton to assist citizens to become more self-sufficient is like asking a Nun for a condom.

A--please, a little more reason, and a little less going ballistic. I happen to agree that zoning laws are a very imperfect situation, and often applied with discrimination. But to say that zoning laws are as awful as you seem to think is too extreme, in my opinion.

If you own a piece of property (and this is generally the largest purchase a person ever makes) don't you think it is fair that someone should be able to move in and make it unlivable? I don't think a neighbor should have the right to do this. My belief is that we should all be able to do whatever we want on our own land AS LONG AS IT DOES NOT adversely affect our neighbors.

If you disagree with this, ok, but I will bet you that I can think of several activities on your neighbors' land that you would object to, if not downright freak out about.

Your absolutely right. If you worked your ass off to beautify your property and to increase it's value, why should joe blow move in next door, setup a pig farm, an ugly-ass barn and play hard rock music all night? Don't laugh about this, it happened right here in our community. After years of complaints, the county came in and bull dozed down the barn and mobile home. But it was too late for the adjacent property owners. The man had a heart attack and died, his wife let the house go back to the bank, they lost everything they had worked for. There's always more to the story than what is reported so don't be so quick to be on the Stitts side.

-- been there saw it (beentheresawit@beentheresawit.com), August 16, 1999.

Pig farm -- if polluted the air or water, then you would have a remedy -- without zoning laws (IF the government hadn't, as I mentioned earlier, gutted tort laws in that area).
"Ugly ass" barn -- sorry -- none of your frickin' business.
Rock and roll all night long -- disturbing the peace.

You haven't justified your fascism to me.
