Recent intuitions, premonitions, prognostications, etc.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Few several days last week we were treated to numerous posts on several threads about premonitions, intuitions, and prognostications of vague, but really bad, things about to happen. Some, but not all, targeted August 11 through August 13 as a period most likely to include the unspecified really bad things. Many posters chimed in with expressions of similar intuitions.

I hope that those who had such feelings are feeling better today.

I also hope that, if they experience such feelings in the future, they somehow manage to get over them before they become tempted to post them.

Be well.

Still the 13th here...checked the weather map. 2 tropical storms and one hurricane (was category 4, last I checked). Hurricane is 72 hours away... (Hopefully they will all miss us...)

Many, many problems in the world today. (Korea-Korea, India-Pakistan, China-Taiwan, Mid-east, Africa, Russia, etc.). I won't worry about dates, just the whole thing!

Carlos,

I think I have already "said enough" on the subject.

Did the world end? No one tells me anything.

Gee, it feels good to laugh at the end of a kind of cruddy day, thanks you guys!

Aloha Mr. Monk:

You didn't mention anything about that drought on the Big Island.

Well Jerry B., I for one appreciate anyone who posts their feelings no matter what. If you don't want to read them SKIP the thread or just find another forum.

For those who posted their feelings please continue to do so. Pay NO ATTENTION to Jerry B. please!!

Ray,

Encouraging people, some of whom may be very sensitive, to set themselves up to be targets of ridicule, just so that you can appreciate them, is quite sad, to put it mildly.

Dear jerry- if you don't like posts that involve "premonitions"- why don't you just skip them o.k.? and stick it where the sun don't shine!

I believe the world is more unstable today than it has ever been, primarily because the huge arsenal of biological, chemical, and nuclear weapons of the former Soviet Union is probably being gradually sold off to enemies of the US. I don't think there is any way for the government to effectivley deal with this problem. If they can't stop drug smuggling in spite of massive expenditures, how are they going to stop these weapons from being brought into the country and used in terrorist attacks?

I want to hear what people are feeling as well as thinking about this whole thing. Premonitions welcome, right or not. I don't like seeing any potentially useful comments suppresed by others' opinions. That is one of the problems with this whole Y2K thing, isn't it?

-- Mara Wayne (MaraWAyne@aol.com), August 14, 1999.

farmer and Mara,

For now let me simply say: if consideration of the ridicule to which the potential posters will be exposed is not enough to give pause to encouraging them, then at least consider thinking through the implications of encouraging unknown people (some of whom may be pure trolls) to post inherently unverifiable assertions here, and doing so within the context of the building PR assaults on Y2K preparers in general, as well as the direct assaults on this forum in particular. In your considerations, factor in the prospect that the importance of verifiable information and the credibility of sources will increase as we approach the rollover. At a minimum, please recognize that this is not a matter of mere personal preferences.

Jerry,

I will come straight to the point... If this sort of thing bothers you, move on! I will post whatever I feel like posting. Last time I checked, this was still a free country.

Premonitions

Jerry--

Don't mean to pry, but -- you bought more DJX puts on Monday-Tuesday, right?

I felt pretty suckered Friday night, too.

-- jor-el (jor-el@krypton.uni), August 15, 1999.

Jerry B., MOST folks have the common sense to understand that predictions are just that, PREDICTIONS. They MAY come true or they MAY NOT.

It appears that you are unable to comprehend this. Suggestion, don't read these threads and let folks do their own THINKING!!

For craps sake, one person, I repeat ONE PERSON makes ONE REFERENCE to something happening in the time frame you referenced (out of dozens of postings on the above referenced premonitions thread), therefore all premonitions should not be discussed.

Come on.

jor-el,

In view of the widening spreads in the bond markets, I bought more DJX puts on Monday and then again on Thursday, before the PPI numbers came out. Then the PPI numbers on Friday calmed down some of the interest rate concerns and the equity markets did what we saw them do.

The puts that I'm buying nowadays are DJVML, January 9000s, so they are relatively "cheap". But if the PPI numbers were "bad" the DJVMLs could have become less cheap, and I'm a tightwad. :-)
