My bank is not Y2K ready.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I read in the paper on monday where thousands of customers of the ANZ Bank (Australia New Zealand Bank) had their ATM cards swallowed by the ATMs last weekend. No reason was given other than to say that it was a computer glitch.

Yesterday while withdrawing a small amount of cash from my local branch (same bank) I asked for a printout of my previous week's transactions, but was told that wasn't possible due to a computer problem. So I then asked for just my current balance, but they couldn't even do that. I jokingly asked the teller if they were having Y2K problems, and she quite candidly said that "Yes, that is the cause".

So uh Malcolm,

Didn't that make you kinda nervous? Did you leave your money in your account? If my bankteller told me that my $$$ would be outtathere.

I have to agree with R, Malcolm. I'd walk.

R and Klar,

No, I wouldn't withdraw just yet. The fact that they are having problems right now tells me that they are working on the issues. If they are still having problems in december then I will close my account.

The other point is that as far as I can tell the other banks are no better :-)

Malcom! "If they are still having problems in december then I will close my account." You have to be kidding! Do you like standing in line? Do you like being told NO? December will be one of those months.

Malcolm, your faith in the system in commendable, however some degree of 'insurance' taken out now would be pragmatic. If the shoe was on the other foot, your bank would have already had you arrested on some kind of fraud charge.

Here's your sign!!!!

The banking problem for depositers, is just like the stock market problem for gamblers, IF EVERY ONE WANTS OUT NO ONE GETS OUT. The less then 1% in this country that know and study about Y2K still have a chance to extract some, if not all of there cash. When J Q public wants some it will be to late. Good luck

Now it is time in the program for AisA or Andy to lecture about the evils of the fractional reserve banking system, nonwithstanding that a "honest" banking system would destroy the very function of a banking system, i.e. lending money.

Oh yeah,

"Get your money out now" "Y2K cannot be fixed" "All bankers are liars" "The banking system is legalized fraud"

Did I miss any?

You missed this one:

"The conveniences and comforts of humanity in general will be linked up by one mechanism, which will produce comforts and conveniences beyond human imagination. But the smallest mistake will bring the whole mechanism to a certain collapse. In this way the end of the world will be brought about." Pir-o-Murshid Inayat Khan, 1922 (Sufi Prophet) " Andy used to be very found of that one. Malcom, I agree with the others, December could be too late to start securing your money.

Yeah, what Chris said. And:

Y2K CANNOT BE FIXED!

Malcolm,

You have been a terrific source of truthful information coming out of the New Zealand electric utility field. I refer to your contributions on the Rick Cowles EUY2K forum. Please keep us updated on the NZ banking situation and their sucess or problems. I expect we are very close to the same situation here, just not openly admitting it yet.

Malcolm,

If your bank could not even tell you your balance, I'd be surprised if they would let you withdraw ANY significant amount of money, unless, perhaps, if you were a long standing customer in good standing.

What do you think?
