Gasoline storage. How and where do you store plastic containers of gasoline around your home or property? Johan

We have a detached garage with a metal storage building behind it where we keep all flammables. We are not planning on storing a lot of gasoline but we have lots of Coleman fuel to run the chainsaw and lamps. We have a dozen or so propane canisters and lots of charcoal. We have a wood burning stove in the garage for summer time cooking and a wood burning insert for heating/cooking the house in winter.

We (and other members of our church) are looking to store drums of gasoline in our (WW II ammo) bunker. We will need to put up decent gates, and maybe work out a key arrangement for the individuals who store fuel. (Underground, dry, limited access).

Gasoline does not store for great lengths of time. You need to add a stabilizer. You can buy cans in the hardware or automotive stores. The brand "Sta-bil" states that it will treat 25 gallons of gas. Cost per can is about $4-5.

I know that deisel fuel does not store well in cold weather. If it freezes, forget it.

Anyone know what temps gas can withstand?

Straight No. 2 diesel will turn into a gell when it starts to get below about 20F, however the fuel is not harmed and will be fine when it warms up again. Most truck stops will switch their diesel blends in the late fall/early winter by including anti-gel additives. You can also buy these anti-gell additives seperately at any good truck stop. I highly recommend that you buy your diesel from a big, busy truck stop because the fuel will be fresh and the truckers have a low tolerance for bad fuel (dirty, or water in it, death to injectors). Diesel for long term storage still needs a fuel stablizer.
