There should be no more doubt from the pollie's..........

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

The failures have started, they are documented, they are real, they are happening right now. I just want to point out to the newbies, the failures are being caused by remediated systems. They are FIXED! They are "READY", TO RUN IN THE YEAR 2000. Shame they don't "run" right. Fix on failure ????????? I wonder what 52% of big business's mission critical systems that won't be done in time, will do. I also wonder what will happen to the fixed/new systems that are slammed into operation in December.

Gee Scotty, another post without any proof. If things are so bad now how come no one is noticing? Here is what some of your leaders have said so far about Y2K. Notice they were wrong on EVERY single prognostication?

"On January 1, 1999 they will experience many more, and it will be much more difficult to sweep them under the rug. On April 1, 1999 we will all watch anxiously as the governments of Japan and Canada, as well as the state of New York, begin their 1999-2000 fiscal year; at that moment, the speculation about Y2K will end, and we will have tangible evidence of whether governmental computer systems work or not."-- Ed Yourdon

"... I believe we'll start seeing [disruptions] by this summer, and I believe they'll continue for at least a year. As many people are now aware, 46 states (along with Australia and New Zealand) will begin their 1999-2000 fiscal year on July 1, 1999; New York (and Canada) will already have gone through their Y2K fiscal rollover on April 1, and the remaining three states begin their new fiscal year on August 1, September 1, and October 1. We also have the GPS rollover problem to look forward to on August 22nd, as well as the Federal government's new fiscal year on October 1st.

There is, of course, some finite probability that all of these rollover events will occur without any problems; but there's also a finite probability that pigs will learn to fly."

-- Ed "Flying Pig" Yourdon

"So, of course I want to see y2k bring down the system, all over the world. I have hoped for this all of my adult life." -- Gary North

April 1, 1999. On this date, Canada, Japan, and the State of New York begin their fiscal year. This will, of course, include dates beyond Y2K. As a result, planning systems, especially budgets that have not been repaired will fail as they attempt to process Y2K dates. Since New York City is the media capitol of the world, problems there will grab headlines worldwide. Problems in Japan will remind everyone again of how interconnected our world is. The Japanese will also be forced to admit that there systems might not make it. I expect the stock market to react and begin (or continue) its downward spiral. Public confidence will continue to wane and the number of Y2K optimists will continue to dwindle.

July 1, 1999. On this date, forty-four U.S. states begin their fiscal years. The problems that began in New York will now spread exponentially across the country and around the world. The public will feel the global and pervasive nature of the Y2K Problem for the first time. This will be further exacerbated by the fact that many states have not had the resources to adequately address their Millennium Bug problems. Consequently, the failures will be real and widespread.

Ah Pro, but you are wrong...people ARE noticing. The 300 folks that haven't been paid in months at the World Bank. The thousands screwed over in the passport fiasco. The hundreds delayed in airline snafus. The users of the park that flooded with sewage. The three teenagers burnt to a crisp by the gas spill. And so on. The numbers are rising...and its not even the middle of August 1999.

Stay tuned, Pro. It will be amusing to see you wet your pants online when the S REALLY starts to HTF.

Sorry Pro,

Unlike those of you who choose to worship CPR, Doc Paulie and the other pathetic wretches at Der Boonkah, I have no "leader". Nice try, though. Convince the world that we're a cult, and no one will take us seriously, right?

Does your living room have to fill up with shit for you to possibly believe there may be problems?

You're getting boring, Pro.

-- ariZONEa (Y2K_Ho@pathetic.com), August 11, 1999.

"a", in order for Y2KPro to wet his/her pants, he/she will first have to remove his/her diaper.

-- Mike (Boxman9186@aol.com), August 11, 1999.

Hey pro,

Please tell me why MCI is currently trying to fix the largest outage in history accross the globe. This problem is costing them millions and yet you sit there with your thumb in your ass quoting Gary North trying to show him as an alarmist.

I suppose you're smarter than Yardeni too? Yeah, that's why they never put you in charge of the world's largest bank, you're to busy proving that Y2K doesn't exist.

Will you be close to a chemical plant on the New Year? Or a Nuke? Or in the air? Or at a refinery? Nah, I doubt it.

If you were really ballsy, you'd committ to spending it at one of these places.

Something just for you, Y2KPro

in reality, large and small users MUST have their systems in place and ready no later than Early 1999 to insure they will work!! Charles P. Rueben

I have stated openly that the "nightmare of the Computer Professionals has come true, ..."the Users got free" ". It was a dramatic way of saying that all the work to clean up a major problem can be "screwed up" by the Fat Clients and the legacy Software and Data Charles P. Rueben

Some of the IT people here are planning trips and intend to be away for the weekend. They think about gold and silver with some preference for the latter. I tell them to have silver and gold coins. In reality, certain types of food would be better because you can barter with that. I, OTOH, want to be liquid but it will be long before 1/1/2000 Charles P. Rueben

But has not the problems been fixed before it brought TEOTWAWKI? Y2K Pro is talkin about TEOTWAWKI and not just your average problems that happen all the time. Problems that you never thought about heavily because you weren't obsessing with people dying and preps.

I wonder what the world was like a few years ago when problems never had happened. In 1999, Y2K created downed telephone communications, computer glitches, explosions, ect. That never happened in history and if they had before, I wonder if they would be TEOTWAWKI or just stuff that happens. Its scary to even think about but I hear rumors that the world had problems pre-1999. If anyone could please confirm that, please do so.

A cult? Well, what do you call the same small group of people, who gather like packs of hyenas at any expression of optimism, and who must dig deeeeep into the noise of everyday imperfections to find dubious examples to support their fantasies?

I get this funny image of a few people standing on the shore shouting "you missed the boat! You're blind!" as the boat sails off and leaves them. But run along and have yourselves a nice little private catastrophe. Don't let us stop you, we're busy with reality.

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), August 11, 1999.

Sounds to me more like you're busy with this forum, Flint.

As I said in another thread - Doomers Creed - "If its a software bug, its GOT to be Y2K, even if it's 1999."

Lots of software upgraded and replaced due to Y2K. For new software and upgrades, software bugs are nothing new. Reality - buy it.

Always leave room for doubt.
Just ask the people who bought Edsels, because it was, no doubt, the best car ever built...

-- Bokonon (bokonon@my-deja.com), August 11, 1999.

Errors in fixed code IS a huge part of y2k. Failure is failure.

-- FLAME AWAY (BLehman202@aol.com), August 12, 1999.

So, Flint and Y2K pro, how are you explaining the 3-4 fold increase in chemical and fuel plant explosions in the last several months?

ALL COINKYDINKS? ...no doubt

Just curious
