Changes

There's been a lot of talk for some time now about the 'changes' we all feel are possibly coming. Solar/Earth weather, Y2K, societal, financial. For a global perspective I recommend you read The Climate Canary IV: A Compendium of Media Climate News

By Alan C. Schroeder and Dave Bassett

Climate Canary IV is organized by the type of weather-related effect that is reported. The Preface pays homage to the historic role of the Canary in sustaining life and welfare. The Forward provides context and discusses more fully the sort of changes that are both predicted and observed. Chapters 1-6 provide a snapshot of observed changes in precipitation and temperature. Chapters 7-11 report some consequences of changes in precipitation and temperature as seen through the eyes of journalists from around the world. Chapters 12 and 13 discuss severe storms. Chapters 14-20 report effects on ecosystems and on the plant and animal world. Chapters 21-22 discuss effects on humans including changes in patterns of disease and biodiversity. Chapters 23-26 report insurance losses and articles relating to food production; pollution levels and the ozone hole. Chapter 27 discusses solutions; 28 provides an Editor's Forum; 29 is a Compiler's Choice of Environmental Darwin Awards as examples of environmentally poor behavior. Chapter 30 is a compendium of very useful Internet Links for reference and for those who wish to explore many issues more thoroughly.

----------

Years ago, Canaries were used in the underground mining industry as living monitors and indicators of air quality. Because Canaries are more sensitive than humans to the deadly effects of methane and carbon dioxide, they were placed in cages and taken with miners deep into coal mines. They served the miners as a 19th century version of familiar modern warning devices like smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. When a Canary died, miners paid immediate attention and quickly got out of the mine before they too died from noxious fumes, oxygen deprivation or explosion. They generally did not debate the causes of the Canary's death before taking action, even though a Canary's death from natural causes was conceivable.

This compendium pays homage to the Canary in its role as indicator of health and well-being. However, the scale of the indicators now needed is global, not local. To compile this compendium, Alan Schroeder scanned thousands of pages of newspaper articles from around the world and extracted articles that are representative of recent concerns and events -- as expressed in the printed media. It is our hope that this Climate Canary IV will provide you with useful indicators of changes in the Earth's environment, as perceived by regular people.

Shelia, thanks for this really in depth climate report. I'm involved with a group that studies the effects of human beings on the environment and this is very helpful. I saved it in my briefcase.

Shelia, are you the person who suggested the Berky Filter System, from the guy in Denton, Texas. If so, I already had a table top Berky. But in case Y2K, is just a blip, I wanted a system that connected to our sink. We ordered it from him and his prices are the best.

Gilda, will you please post or e-mail me the info on the man with the good price on Berkefield filters? Am ready for that item now. Thanks much!

Gilda: Great! I purify my water (cooking/drinking) everyday too. The municipal systems have been working on overload for many years (had an ex-father-in whose work involved finding chemical solutions to the metroplex water systems' problems). So I used to buy water till I found Gene...it's much easier and certainly less expensive to do it yourself.

Thanks, Shelia! Printed it out. Quite a difference in price from other filters. Really could make quite a difference to those on a tight prep budget.

Shelia, I told Gene at Pure Water Products that I'd found the information on this forum from a satisfied customer of his. I meant to send him a link of the post it was on, but I forgot to. But he was pleased that you had recommended him, and I was to.

Elaine you won't be disappointed. My husband talked with him and found out what was best for us with our extremely hard water.

Shelia, here I go again. Are you the person that posted one of the funniest posts I've read on this forum. The name Shelia seems to stick in my mind concerning it. It was about family moving in during Y2K. At the time of the post, I thought we were going to have that situation, but things changed. Anyway the person wrote about her in-laws moving in and her mother and mother-in-law not getting along and it kind of went on to the possiblity of the poster being driven nuts and jumping onto the table, waving a shotgun, and screaming at everybody. Let me know. I didn't print out the post, and now I can't find it. It sounded like my extended family would behave under similar circumstances.

Sorry Sheila, I forgot to delete my friend Jean's name. That was my post about the family situation. I need a good laugh, and it was hilarious.

Environmental Effects of Increased Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide

Gilda, I remember the post you are referring to...there's another Sheila, or was it Shellie? Not me...although it's possible my children and grandchildren may be here (but they all GI and are doing their own preps so it's unlikely)... I haven't had too much ridicule from family, although I'm the most serious about preps the kids, and my other sister and two brothers are all preparing. We all always been close, and there is a strong tradition in my family to sit down and discuss anything someone feels seriously about rather than just dismiss them. We all were able to get together (one brother in Montana, one in California, and sister in Arizona near her son and grandchild) and have a conference...plus lots of prior email and phone conversations for about six months.

My sister's son works as a computer specialist in the oil exploration field...goes out with the boats for five weeks at a time. When I first talked with him about GPS he didn't think there was anything to it...said they would have mentioned it to him if there were any problems. On his next trip he asked his boss if there was any truth to it all....didn't get much of a response. Then on his last trip out they handed him the remediation software and he spent five weeks remediating. That was July -- Talk about just in time! He will be out on the boat on the 21st...hoping nothing was missed.

Thanks for replying Shelia. I just happened to think it was one of the funniest posts I'd read. Maybe someone else will remember it. Sounds like you won't be having much problem with your family, and that's a bit plus.
