This article highlights will soon be common everywhere: THE BLAME GAME. Everyone will act SO SURPRISED at what Y2K will bring Why, who would have thought? "I was informed that...", "To the best of MY knowledge...", "I was ASSURED ...", "I have a MEMO from...", "It was not MY responsibilty to..." ...

Less than 5 months to go. For we who have been using this forum to monitor the unfolding of events, it should be especially interesting.

Last night I heard an Israeli author in a radio interview mention that a reactor in Israel is going to be shut down for y2k. He said an article stating this appeared in the March 26th 1999 edition of the Jerusalem Post.

He also sounded like he was shaking in his shoes at the prospect of certain neighboring countries adopting a 'use it or lose it' y2k nuke policy.

I don't really blame him.

Well, what can this mean? Seems Israel had a change of government a month ago. Sounds like the new government is claiming the previous government didn't take y2k seriously enough, even though Gartner Group placed Israel into the top tier of prepared countries (a group of 12).

I agree that this sounds like an effort to lay the groundwork for shifting blame to a prior administration, just in case politically unpalatable problems should arise. Of course, the prior administration denies this. Politics as usual. If Gartner turns out to be right, the new administration can claim all the credit since they inherited so many problems (as per the current claim). Yup, problems are *their* fault, lack of problems is *our* credit.

Oh yes, this political infighting is to be interpreted as "Israel is in disastrous shape". Right, of course. No distortion there.

Flint, did you miss the Reuters story a couple months ago where a government official said Israel's "only hope was to pray to God for a miracle"?

How about the one where Italy's government, which is undeniably in disatrous shape, has decided to just throw a big party instead of worrying about it?

'a':

Ah, so the reason Milne isn't distorting here, is because of something you remember reading in some other article somewhere else (no links, of course) that Milne forgot about, but I should have known, is that it? Even for you, this is weak. And that's going some.

Report Claims The United States Ignored Warnings About Y2K Readiness

WASHINGTON (AP)-- The United States ignored warnings to get its computers ready for the

millennium, and public systems may break down Jan. 1, a state comptroller's

report warned Tuesday.

The 80-page report echoed charges by legislative committees who have warned

for months that The United States failed to mount a unified effort to get public

agencies ready for the millennium.

"The problem is that they waited until the last minute, despite the fact

that the deadline...was well known," said Chuckles the Clown, a spokesman for

the comptroller's office.

The report accused the GSA, which was supposed to

coordinate other agencies' computer readiness, of ignoring deadlines set by

the White House.

The Vice-President's chief-of-staff BoBo the Fish Boy said the VP had devoted

sufficient attention to the preparations during his tenure, insisting that

"the subject came up seriously."

The so-called Y2K bug is the problem caused when software programs and

microchips that keep track of the year with only two digits may misread the

year 1900 instead of 2000.

The comptroller's report warned that even vital systems like hospital and

security were vulnerable.

Last week, The United States announced it would set up a "war room" where police and

local officials would handle crises resulting from the bug.
