Embedded Systems - Not a Big Deal?

Was there much of a response to the opinion change of Dave Hall (as cited in this newspaper article)? Moreover, was his reputation as an "embeddeds expert" widely accepted in the Y2k community?

It's old news that the embedded chip/embedded system problem isn't as big as originally estimated. I've been hearing that since at least the end of last year. The problem was and still is that in a complex system, even just one failure could have major consequences.
