A SMALL tidbit from the Akron Ohio Credit Union. Flyer to members dated August 1999. The organization states that it is Y2K complient, however,they have developed a spreadsheet to record transactions in the event that their tested and passed processing system fails due to electrical failure. The system uses battery operated laptop computers. Teams of ATCU staff members will hand write receipts for processing by other staff members who will transfer the information onto the battery operated laptops. This will insure that members have complete access to their account balances and history.( Great preparation...they should be commended !) The interesting note which caught everyone's attention was the statement that, and I quote, "Off-Duty Police will be on the premises to provide for security needs." The organization stated that these precautions are likely not necessary. But...?!?!? Also the Columbus Ohio electric company devoted their last flyer to the safe installation of generators. I admit that I never read the flyers included with bills and these items were shown to me by others who are more observent. This is really petty stuff compared to the global postings that I (lurking) have seen on this site. I am rather embarrassed to post here BUT, I guess that my question is " has anyone noticed any other 'small' indications of serious trouble?"

Check your public library for First Energy's little missive, whjich can be paraphrased as "We've been working on it for a LONG time, and it looks OK to US, but we don't know about our suppliers, so...."

don't know where else the fliers are, just saw them at my Public Library, here on the North Coast.

Hmmmm. Laptops eh?

Never have seen one who was able to work with one batterie for more then 4-6 hrs.

So, how do they recharge them if they don't have power?

Do they have enugh spare batteries?

Do they know that batteries installed in laptops WILL discharge because of the idling current drawn? Even if the computer is shut off.

Questions to ask!

The idea is pricipialy (sp) good but I fear that it probably was drawn up by some media guy who does not know those things.

It will placate the average custommer who has not much of an idea and who only knows that laptops run on a batterie and they will work after a power outage.... but HOW LONG?
