Guyana's President To Resign . . . uh, health problems, yeah, that's the ticket.

The white female Chicago-born former Marxist is packing it in. Let's see, her plan was to overcome distrust by the majority black population by increasing foreign trade? Can you say one way ticket to O'Hara?

Correction: Majority of population is not Afro-Guyanese but "Indian Guyanese." She is popular with the Indian faction but not the Afro faction.

Actually, the mistrust is because the majority in the country are Indian-Guyanese, and that does mean from India. They were her husband's main support (she was elected president after he died. He was of Indian decent), and the minority Afro-Guyanese do not trust her because she is white and enjoys Indian-Guyanese support. It has very little to do with Marxism or foreign trade.

You beat me to it, Puddintame...

By the way, could anything be less relevant to Y2K than this?

-- pshannon (pshannon@inch.com), August 09, 1999.

I can think of something just slightly less relevant to Y2K than this;

Last week my wife bought me some new underwear and then after work tonight I am going golfing.........

I plan on hitting all of my balls into the trees because they are not guaranteed to be 100% Y2K compliant and so they will not survive the roll-over anyway........See, I can use Doomer logic too!!!!!

pshannon, I'm glad you responded because I was unaware that Indian in this context meant India. How did that situation develop?

By the way, regarding the connection to y2k, probably none. However, if I were president of a 3rd world nation, I'd resign and move back to Chicago and it would be because of y2k. Some of that Naval War College postulation resonates with my way of thinking.

Craig, maybe your wife can kiss your balls before you hit them into the trees.....your golf balls that is.

I used to work with two guys from Guyana, one was Indian, one was Afro, and man! did those two guys hate each other! I don't know specifically why there is such a large South Asian population in Guyana (also Bangledeshi, though at the time of the immigration to South America, it was all under British rule). Probably for the same reason there are Scottish in Argentina, Japanese in Peru, German in Uruguay, Pakistani in Denmark and Trinidadian here in Brooklyn. Humans move around. Always have, always will. Guyana does have a Carib Indian population, the last known cannibals in the western hemisphere, though the majority of them are on the island of Dominica. The last great Carib Chief (I forget his name) supposedly said, "I don't like eating Christians. They give me a bellyache." Of course, the Caribs are now mostly Roman Catholic...

pshannon,

Could there be anything more irrelevant than your little "jab" at Roman Catholicism? I didn't know this forum went quite that far, but no thank you for your "enlightening" comments regarding others faiths and beliefs. PAX!

I don't get it. The Caribs were cannibals. They converted. What's the jab?

-- pshannon (pshannon@inch.com), August 09, 1999.

Actually, I should have said that the vast majority of them were wiped out. The few that remained converted...

....thanks for the clarification. I'm sure you can see how your statement could be (and was) misconstrued.
