Thai army acts on Y2K problem

BANGKOK _ The Thai military plans to shut down all computer-controlled weapons systems that are not Y2K compliant before December 31 to ensure there are no disasters, a newspaper said yesterday. The Bangkok Post cited assurances given by Major General Van Anand, deputy army comptroller, to dismiss fears raised by a deputy prime minister that an air defence missile could malfunction and strike a civilian aircraft. Van said that the deputy premier, Trairong Suwankhiri, was too quick to voice his worries and lacked a full understanding of the situation, the Post reported.
