GAO: Medical bills, records may encounter Y2K problems

By Alice Ann Love, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) A new government report raises questions about whether health care providers, from doctors to hospitals, are prepared to head off problems with medical bills and records that could be caused by the Y2K computer bug.

Failures in health care providers' billing systems have been discovered in Y2K testing conducted by Medicare, according to the previously unreleased report from the General Accounting Office, an investigative arm of Congress.

"Testing with providers has been limited and reported results are not encouraging,'' the GAO told the House Commerce Committee in a July 28 report obtained by The Associated Press.

The report did not assess whether hospitals, doctors' offices and others are doing enough to ensure that medical devices such as X-ray machines or heart-monitors that use computer chips will work properly starting Jan. 1, 2000.

But the GAO was generally critical of surveys that industry groups, such as the American Medical Association and the American Hospital Association, have used to offer public reassurance that the nation's health care system will be Y2K ready.

"None of the 11 surveys we reviewed provided sufficient information with which to assess the Year 2000 status of the health care community,'' said the GAO report.

Separately on Thursday, the President's Council on Year 2000 Conversion cited health care among areas of concern in its third quarterly report.

"The existing information of the readiness of some health care providers indicates that much work remains to be done,'' said the council.

Isn't this amazing. This is the INFORMATION age. We need to get  INFORMATION about the status of the INFORMATION technology of certain entities. But, we **SOMEHOW*** can not seem to get the INFORMATION.  And, of the INFORAMTION that we do have, the INFORMATION  is not good.

Why can't we get this simple INFORMATION?  Because they are NOT remediated. Not even close and they can not tell the truth. Or I should say, WILL not tell the truth.

The fact remains that with all these supposedly intelligent people employed in INFORMATION technology, we can not  even get  simple INFORMATION from them.  Billions of dollars of hardware and software and they can not even render up a little simple INFORMATION. Clear, consice and definitive information. But we CAN get all manner of happy faced spin filled with "we're working on it", ans "we're spending a lot of money on it" and "We expect to be ready". None of these things says ANYTHING at all in the sense of definitive information that enough has been done.

That's all the *INFORMATION*  that I need.

The remediation has failed.

Only 88 work days left...It is beginning to look a lot like a WIPEOUT!!

Oh! Yes, subtract the 23 workdays in December and the Three work days in Nov. after Turkey day. Why?? Nothing of substance takes place in Dec. IT NEVER HAS!!!

Just 62 productive work days 'till da ROLL!!!

We never thought health care had a chance. Worked in it too much, seen creeping encroachment of automation, HMOs, bottom line feeding frenzy erode and wipe out the humane and sensible foundation.

If Y2K is a Bump as in foothills, we hospice caregivers will have lots of work.

If Y2K is a Bump as in POPOCATEPETL, we'll have no work.

After what we've seen in the last two days, we think the little dormant bump will erupt with fierce fire and brimstone and Pompei civilization.
