8/6/99 -- 3:05 PM This would be funny were the possibility of it happening to me not so possible. Geez! But then I've only got four barrels and my neighbors do know why...and they know us.

Raid uncovers Y2K stockpiling effort

------------------------------------------------------------------------

WASHINGTON (AP) - The neighbors could see something was up. There had been unmarked cars on both sides of the street ``clearly doing surveillance,'' one man said.

Indeed, an investigation had been in the works for weeks, since a tip came in that big containers were being delivered to a house on a quiet street in the nation's capital. There were worries about the makings of a bomb.

Friday morning at 7:30 the raid was on. The street was crowded with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, with local police and explosives experts, with State Department officials.

And. ...

``We did not find sufficient material to warrant a further investigation,'' said Brian Burns, a special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

They did find 30 empty 55-gallon plastic drums.

Residents said they intended to use the drums to store water - out of concern about shortages that might be caused by Year 2000 computer problems on Jan. 1.

They checked them out for weeks!!! What sort of checking did they do that they couldn't deduct that these people weren't in the bomb making business. So much for all their technology and expertise. After weeks of surveillance they still deduced that these people could well be stocking up on bomb supplies.

Let's see 30 drums at $20.00 a piece equals $600.00. plus storage.

Recently purchased one of those english made water filters that can filter pond or rain water for 20,000 to 60,000 gallons. $300.00

Can anyone refute having one of these filters over storing hundreds of gallons of water?

Yes, two reasons: one, location of the nearest surface water supply may make the trip untenable and dangerous. Two, you will not know for some time the extent to which hazmat accidents have contaminated that water more than it usually is...that's why I am prestoring water. But I also have the Katadyn to clean rain water collected if there are prolonged problems with the water system.

Coverin' the bases...keepin' my options open.

Dave;

Here in San Jose, CA you can not drill a well cause they sucked all the water out when it was orchard land and the ground droped 10 feet in places, so they get real mad at wells here. And it does not rain from MARCH to NOVEMBER some years. That means if you do not store it, you will not have it, filter or not!!!

Filters are great, but you have to have something to filter.

Not to mention that in January the available water in vast numbers of states is in solid state.

I only brought one 55 drum simply because of my neighbors, my advance be cafeful with store bought water some of bottles have leak on me.

I going to rinse out some soda bottles and use them instead there have a stronger plastic than the store bought water.

May not have even dirty water to process with a filter.

Thankyou, thankyou,

Your responses allow me to have multiple great brains instead of just ONE!!!

Fortunately we are positioned with very close water source that does not freeze and as far as I know cannot be contaminated! (wew)

No BATF allowed!!

Water filters, water barrels, two-liter water bottles, cisterns: prepare for adversity. The more you have, the less you'll suffer.
