VCD plays as noise on PPC Macintosh clone

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

When I try to play VCDs on my PPC, I just get a whole lot of multicoloured noise (with bits of movie in the background), and sound which constantly cuts in and out. Has anyone encountered this problem before? I have a UMAX Pulsar (Mac clone) running Mac OS 8.6, with a PPC 604e processor @185MHz, 128MB RAM, Matshita CD-ROM, Twinturbo 128 video card with 4MB VRAM. I have the quicktime MPEG extension installed, and have tried with both Quicktime 3 and 4, and with several shareware VCD players, to no avail. All help greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Andrea

You have exactly the same problem as I do. I have a Umax J700. I have researched this and finnally found the answer on the Umax website. The reason is Matsushita CD ROM does not play VCD. They suggested changing the drive to some other driver which I could not find on the web and they don't give a hint either. I added a Yamaha CD-RW and this one play beautiful VCD on Quicktime 4. Hope this help.

P.S. I downloaded the *.dat file to the hard drive and for unknown reason it won't play either.

A possible explanation why the *.dat file won't play from harddrive is that the file got corrupted during transfer from Matsushita CD-rom.
