911 SERVICE FALLS BEHIND IN Y2K FIX

With fewer than 150 days left, Only 37 percent of the nation's 911 emergency call centers are ready for Y2K, according to a government report.

The chair of the President's Council on the Year 2000 Conversion told reporters on Thursday that 911 computer failures may force local emergency personnel to abandon automated locator systems for "manual dispatch methods" -- which could slow response time.

"The problem is particularly acute in medium-sized communities that are big enough to have automated 911 systems but not large enough to have the personnel to upgrade them," the LOS ANGELES TIMES reports in Friday editions.

Many municipalities are urging residents to call 911 on Y2K only in real emergencies.

Others are advising residents to have the local phone numbers of fire, police or ambulance services available to be dialed directly.
