A question of scope

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Most are familiar with the Y2K Catastrophic Scale, where 1 is a "bump in the road" (or BITR) and 10 is "the end of the world as we know it" (or TEOTWAWKI). How would you catagorise the effects and impact of Y2K you believe likely using this scale?

Andy Ray

A guy walks into a bar and orders six drinks. When the bartender sets them on the counter, the man quickly downs each one. Wow, says the bartender, you sure were in a hurry. The man says, You would be too if you had what I had. What is it that you have? ask the bartender, Fifty cents, replied the man.

As soon as the laugh cramps fail and I can think and type at the same time I'll think about the apropriateness of this type of post. It would APPEAR that TIC polls are not getting any more respect than I do around the house. I'm not sure whether that's a blessing or curse.

Chuck

Oh TIC= Tongue In Cheek

Andy, I SUPPOSE weeesa ought to have an off forum discussion about these, but, maybe later. My E-mail address works. Lets look at this as adults. CR

Chuck,

I think that Mr. Ray should be permanently banned from this forum, after reading his remarks here:

TBY2K SYSOP(s) ATTENTION PLEASE!!

I've NEVER suggested this about anyone, but this guy is just a troublemaker, wasting everyone's time.

Get lost, Andy Ray! <:(=

-- Sysman (y2kboard@yahoo.com), August 03, 1999.

NO don't ban Andy from the forum! I want to see the changes in him as he slowly starts to get it. The newly converted have a way of making you believe they have always been saved. Will this be true of Andy when he joins the ranks?

A 50's hipster is eating dinner in a diner. Afterwards, the waitress comes to his table and asks him if he wants any dessert.

"How's the pie?", the hipster asks.

"The pie is gone", says the waitress.

"Cooool. I'll take a piece of that craaaazy pie!" says the hipster.

This question was already discussed, AT LENGTH. BigDog (?) took a poll last week, and got a hundred or so responses, then averaged everything out. Let's not waste bandwidth on questions already (RECENTLY) dealt with...

-- Dennis (djolson@pressenter.com), August 03, 1999.

People have different definitions for what each number represents, so a poll of that nature is meaningless. Someone already said my view was like an "11 or 12" according to what he used as a 10 point scale. It's really pretty pointless.

-- (its@coming.soon), August 03, 1999.

Here's a recent poll based on probabilities of different scenarios:

Folks, want my guess? From the manner in which Andy Ray poses his questions, I'd say, having taken a course in statistics and surveys that he is not trolling, but is polling for his own purposes, i.e., writing a paper on the Y2K mentality pre-rollover. If you never answer polls, well then...

Time's a-wasting...

Elaine,

We already know that Mr. Ray is "writing a book," or so he says. Although he was posting some pretty MORONIC questions (In My Humble Opinion), I was actually considering giving him more cooperation, and even more so, I was thinking about trying to talk the forum into it!!! I'm sure many "post Y2K" books will be written, and I figured it could be "good" to "know" one of the authors.

Then of course, we learn the REAL reason why Mr. Ray is here. What he did was place a loaded gun in a digital school yard.

Get lost, Andy Ray! <:(=

In my studies of the reaction to the issue, I have collected thousands of quotes from people making fantastic and catastophic claims (in an effort begun 1 Jan 99). I plan to post these quotes on 3 Jan 00 on a website dedicated to giving pause to those who would practise fear-mongering in the future.

Chuck,

I'm ammenable to an off-forum discussion. I too appreciate the "TIC" humor! It's good that things have improved around here, and I attribute that mostly to your leadership style - with thanks.

LinkMeister,

Thank you. I missed that one. It contains a lot of useful information, too.

Elaine,

Thank you for the attempt - but facts sometimes only cloud the issue. I have resisted the attempt at any explanation until this point, but the truth is (and I will only post this once) someone went around posing as me here and at several sites and posted drivel with my name and email address attached. I got "response updates" and email from people who saw my "post" at sites I have never personally visited. I do not believe I did anything wrong, but, as stated earlier, facts seem to muddy the waters for some.

After this occurred, I searched several other threads here, and found my name attached to repsonses I would never make. Disagreement is one thing, attempting to silence all debate is quite another. It has not worked, and I have patiently ignored (until now) the rhetoric that I believe sprung from this unfortunate circumstance - including Sysman's "threats," early@Andy.Ray's postings and links, and the calls for permanent banning.

It will take permanent banning of some form or other to prevent me from asking Y2K-related, non-biased questions on this forum. I would not expect this of Chuck, but I am not surprised by the hypocritical calls for denying me a right to ask simple, open-ended questions without harassment from the champions of freedom and self-sufficiency here. I am not really affected one way or the other by this episode or the resultant attacks, and have and will continue to post whatever Y2K-related questions I choose until rendered incapable.

I will not discuss any of this further on this forum. As stated above, this is the one and only time I will address this issue.

In the meantime, you (GI's, doomers) are demonstrating for the silent masses who are curiously searching the Internet for information regarding Y2K your true attitude towards others - from the fantasies about pit-cooking your opponents in this debate and sharing their flesh after they have died because of their lack of preparedness for what some maniacally maintain will be a disastrous New Year, to the very fast responses to my questions allegedly seeking homosexual relations with me in "CellBlockD." (See above.)

Please continue. I have two stated objectives. The second is to demonstrate for these lurking masses the true and horrid nature of those on your side of the argument.

Elaine, I see from your email address that you may be a person of faith. You may be interested in Interesting Y2K debate tactics - a must-read for GI Christians..., though I apologise in advance for some of the language utilised there. Perhaps, if you have been visiting here long, you have grown accustomed to it.

Andy Ray

"including Sysman's "threats,""

Mr. Ray,

You are walking on very thin ice here sir! Please post a link, or other reference, that you consider a threat! If you are talking about my SUGGESTION that you be banned from this forum, well sir, based on the evidence that I have seen, posted on this forum, I stand by my OPINION.

Maybe I missed something, Andy. If this is so, please show me what it is. If you are saying that you did not post the information that I am talking about, and we do know what that is, don't we Andy?, maybe you could ask one of the Sysops here to confirm that your IP address did not post that information. If Diane or Chuck would like to send me an e-mail that I can reply to, I will offer you an apology, in all caps, bold, italic, in 24 point type, in the color of your choice!

But first, show me the THREAT, Mr. Andy Ray.

Signed, <:)=

Sysman,

You typed:
I think that Mr. Ray should be permanently banned from this forum.
I disagree with many people here, but I not once have suggested that they be silenced. I will not waste anymore bandwidth offering any defense, as it will be summarily dismissed, as you have just demonstrated - and I apologise for my earlier attempt at an explanation. I knew it was a mistake...just thought with the new moderator some tolerance would prevail.

Sysman, I do not desire an apology from you; or anyone else on this forum.

Regards,
Andy Ray

-- Andy Ray (andyman633@hotmail.com), August 03, 1999.

Sysman,

I think that Mr. Ray should be permanently banned from this forum.
Your words, sir.

I disagree with people here and at other forums, but never have I suggested they be denied expression. It was a mistake for me to attempt any explanation, one that will likely be repaid repeatedly here by my detractors. I thought the change of moderators was a signal of more tolerance.

Sysman, I do not desire an apology from you - not now, nor do I believe I will ever desire any from you.

Regards,
Andy Ray

Mr. Ray,

So, I guess you don't have any examples of a THREAT. I do expect an apology, Mr. Ray.

And you "just thought with the new moderator some tolerance would prevail". So you figured that the moderators would like your "kewl" idea of posting an answer to a DIFFERENT thread. That was just a whole bunch of fun, wasn't it Mr. Ray? Kept Diane busy for the whole afternoon.

You don't have a "defense".

Fuck you, Andy Ray! <:(=

-- Sysman (y2kboard@yahoo.com), August 03, 1999.

Oh, and Mr. Ray:

"I also want to say, to be fair, I DO NOT think Andy Ray started this-- at least with the HTML code thingy--however, he and the others "appear" to be threatening to continue it and do worse. That is what I take issue with on their end right now.

On this end, the "Andy Ray clone troll" and some additional copycats have been leaving quite a trail... be warned... STOP IT! NOW!!!

Diane -- Diane J. Squire (sacredspaces@yahoo.com), July 29, 1999"

Just to be fair, Mr. Ray, I never accused you of starting this. You, sir, In My Humble Opinion, couldn't figure out that "HTML code thingy" with a teacher AND a stack of books! You are just one of the players. The one that was stupid enough to get cought.

Get, well, you know, Andy Ray! <:(=

So that is the way you see it.... HHHHMMMMMMM

Of course you would like to have the evidence put before the forum and let the folks make the choice?

Your call

-- Brian (imager@home.com), August 04, 1999.

Oh, and by the way, Mr. Ray, I'm a 6 or seven on your scale. You can QUOTE me as a SIX.FIVE many times here.

Been there, done that. THIRTY.ONE years ago, I got my first paycheck, as a second shift IBM 360/30 computer operator. That was the first time that I asked about MM/DD/YY, before I was a Senior in the hi-school class of '69.

As a systems programmer and network administrator, now, today, well, Mr. Ray,

Well, You know, ..... ..... .....

<:(=

-- Sysman (y2kboard@yahoo.com), August 04, 1999.

Sysman,

I have no apology for you today.

If I do something I feel I should apologise for, I will, however. That has not occurred thus far.

Thank you for demonstrating my earlier claim that "facts only cloud the issues for some." That apparently applies to seasoned programmers, as well.

Regards,
Andy Ray
