Did you see the stainless steel thermas cooking pots advertised on the infocommersials on Sundays on the TV. Thermas cooking in a 9 inch diameter stainless steel pot. Great for Y2K.

Here's a thought.What about lining a small cooler with one of those mylar space blankets, bring the food to a boil, put it in the cooler, fold the space blanket over it, shut the cooler. I've never done this, but now I am tempted to try it.

i had a friend get all excited about thermos cooking with really good thermoses--then she did it a couple of times according to directions and it came out awful. she felt it didn't work.

regarding cooking with minimal heat, i have always been able to cook rices and pastas by bringing the water to a boil (i have metal farberware pans-an aluminum pan might not work as well), put the materials in for a few minutes, bring them to a boil, put on the cover, shut off the heat and let it sit. cooks everytime.
