Y2k Forum Glossary

Consider the following hypothetical Y2k forum sentence.

"My DWGI ex will hopefully GI once TSHTF. He thinks FOF will work but when FEMA, Health and DOD go Infomagic, the sheeple stampede, and the banks run out of paper it will be harder to be a polly."

Say Wha?

"My willfully ignorant ex-husband will hopefully grasp the realities of Y2k once things start to really come down. He thinks if they try to fix all the unremediated systems after they have crashed that that will work but when the Federal Emergency Management folks, the Health Dept and the Dept of Defense all go down at once, the unprepared masses panic, and the bank runs close down the banking system, then it will be harder to say that nothing is going to happen."

We are ALL of us Preparers, doomers, trolls, pollys, shills, organizers, writers, geeks, lurkers, educators, sysops we are all speaking an arcane language!!! Then we are surprised when no one knows what the heck we are talking about!!!!

Here is a glossary of terms. Please contribute any useful terms I have missed. Specifically those that relate to Y2k and not just the Net in general.

BITR see Bump In The Road

Bump In The Road

Also BITR

1. A term made famous by the Senate Report findings on Y2k which was released in late Feb. of '99. In the opening summary Y2k is described as "A bump in the road." The actual meaning of this term is vague and has no specific technical or organizational use. In general it is thought of as meaning a minor disturbance in ones' life. A brief jolt and then smooth sailing again.

Compliant

1. A completely compliant system which has been fully remediated and tested and is expecting no Y2k glitches.

2. A partially compliant system which might work as long as all its vendors are compliant and compatible.

3. A vague term used to describe the management declared exaltations of success of self audited and self reported remediation

DOD Department of Defense

DWGI Don't wanna get it.

1. Somebody with all the information at their disposal and who can understand and discuss the possible effects but who still lives as though Y2k is not happening at all.

2. Someone who doesn't want to hear anything at all about Y2k in the fear that they will Get It.

See: Get It, GI

Doomer

1. Someone who has assessed the risks and expects Y2k to cause serious disruptions in most peoples lives.

FEMA Federal Emergency Management something??? Can anyone help me out here?

Fix On Failure

1. Fixing a system after it fails instead of trying to prevent it from failing in the first place.

Get It

Also - GI

1. Someone who "gets" Y2k . Someone who understands what Y2k is and why it might affect your life even if you don't use a PC at work.

2. Someone who is making serious life decisions based on their knowledge of Y2k.

Grid failure

1. The total collapse of the power grid leaving millions in the dark and cold.

Happy Face

1. Indicates a report or term designed to make scary statistics or events seem less frightening or consequential. Happy Talk, Happy Face Report

Infomagic

1. The poster who described the "worst case" scenario as a total collapse in the infrastructure and a de-evolutionary spiral. 2. Also the name for that scenario

IS Information Systems

IT Information Technology

Polly

1. Someone who has assessed the risks and expects Y2k not to cause serious disruptions in most peoples lives.

Roll Over

1. That moment between 12/31/99 and 01/01/00 when all the computers will roll over into Y2k.

ROTFLMAO Rolling On The Floor Laughing My Ass Off

Sheeple

1. Those who choose to follow blindly what others tell them without thinking for themselves.

Shill

1. (in this context) Someone paid to spread dis-information

Troll

1. Someone who posts on a forum in a deliberately disruptive manner.

TSHTF The Shit Hits The Fan (as in when.)

1. Whenever everything really starts to feel the effects of Y2k

2. 1/1/2000

TEOTWAWKI The End Of The World As We Know It 1. A term used to describe the collapse of civilization as know it. Serious disruptions in goods and services, worldwide power outages, collapse of food production and distribution, cessation of most government services etc. It is sometimes confused with TEOTW The End Of The World, End Times or Armageddon. It is not meant to imply the end of human life on earth it is instead meant to describe a return to pre-industrial technology without pre-industrial skills, tools, or livestock.

AH! What good would a cult be without a well written "Bible".

Don't forget to record the hypocrisy that occurs here on a regular basis when "trolls" are thought of as inflamatory, abusive, name calling jerks when the inflamatory, abusive, name calling Doomers manage to come out smelling like a bed of roses.

"Troll" is a non-denominational tern. If I went to the "Debunking" site and started disrupting threads then I would be a troll too.

I choose less sociopathic modes of expression.

Ah here is a perfect example of a troll.

Notice, no name or Email addy, refers to forum members as a "cult" obviously John Koskinen is a cult member now. His line is now "weeks or months of disruption.

Not to stick up for the "doomers" (they can do it themselves) but the most vocal at least have their names and E Address to back their views up.

I am sure that folks that can read can also make up their minds on who is being unreasonable and who is being reasonable without mindless drivel such as is displayed above. More often than not this is a small group of people that enjoy childish pranks. Some of these small minded folk have also tried to disrupt and remove the forum for good.

I am of the opinion that fear drives them. Notice the "Bible" referance. I would say Dictionary would be more in order. Yet the inflection of religious meaning when the problem is actually two missing 00s in alot of code? If they don't understand the problem,,, why are they here??? I find it impossible that anyone has seriously considered this the time when Christ is returning just because of poor business practises in code renovation it the past.

And to keep on topic, this is a rather funny old thread.
