Deep Do-Do, literally

Hello fellow Yourdonites, Last evening while frequenting my favorite watering hole I ran into an old friend who has been working out of state for the last 8-10 months. He is an architect. Prior to his move we had in depth discussions as to the possible effects of y2k and we agreed that the potential for disasters were rather high. Both of us are GI's. We just disagree as to the severity of disruptions. Come to find out, my friend, lets call him Dick, was hired to design a new water treatment and sewage facility for one of the largest metro areas in the southeast, the reason, the old facility is toast. He said the old plants were so inundated with non compliant systems that the only alternative was to build new plants. He said the new systems will not be completed until June or July of next year at the earliest, and his greatest fear is that the failure of the transportation systems will complicate the delivery of goods and services after roll-over, thus he will not be able to get the equipment needed to finish the project. I was rather shocked by his front line, off the cuff quip. This is freaky, there are millions reliant upon the system he is overseeing. Can you say dis-ease?

Gee maybe those "bumps in the road" will be raw sewage.

Lovely.

This confirms an impression that I had while watching the CBS Sunday Morning Y2k segment today. The man opened up a big cabinet with additonal panels behind the front panels with the comment that these control the water system for this city of 20,000 people and there will be no problems. DUH. They sure looked like embedded systems to me. Were they tested and fixed? Will the water be safe if the pumps work? This was glossed over big time. Even Curly and Shep wondered about it.

Moe,

I'm not worried about Ashland's water supply. And, I'm a so-called "doomer". They started working on water system middle of last year. Ashland and other communities in the area had (starting last year) put in orders to stockpile chemicals. Plus we're surrounded by rivers. Plus lots of wells and septic systems in immediate area. Very pro-active area. People with wells will help those without - if situation gets bad.

Now major cities are another, BIGGER problem!!!

When I read posts like this I realize there are many more trolls than just Andy Ray and Y2K PRO.
