My husband and I just discovered this forum last month and have been "lurking" daily....I feel so dirty. Humor aside, the forum is thought provoking and informative, that's why we're here.

Flame Away: Good question. As you may know, I have been especially interested in trying to help newbies that come to the forum, and I will be checking in to see what responses there are. Thanks for asking this, Rob.

Great comeback, Mabel! Welcome to TB2K! (I hope you've visited the Preps Forum, hotlink under "About"?)

-- Old Git (anon@spamproblems.com), July 31, 1999.

I have been visiting this forum for just over a week, although I have been a regular at Rick Cowles forum for a couple of months.

Reading the posts that appear here I would probably rate myself as being more to the Polly end of the scale, but my position is also influenced by the fact that I'm in New Zealand, and we are unlikely to face the same issues during our summer that USA will face in the middle of winter. It is also my experience that NZ in general appears to have been working on the issues much harder than USA.

My main purpose in visiting Y2K forums is not to push my arguments so much as to find out how other people are coping. Although I will respond when I see people making statements as facts when they are only based on assumptions. (But then, some of these can be entertaining).

Malcolm

Thanks Old Git, I've seen the prep forum and have taken note of some great information. I guees I've been "lurking" all over the place...heh heh heh

Personally, I would also recommend another site, MICHAEL HYATT's forum. It has a decidedly Christian leaning, so if you're not into that, be forewarnded. BUT, the info in the Y2K Prep BBS is very good, and vile trolling is forbidden (the posters are BANNED from the site ater 2 warnings).

So people are quite polite and caring, as a general rule. Check them out as well.

New to the forum-yes. (but Ive been following the general Y2k news and some mailing lists for about 18 months or so)I found it just about the time that the prep forum split off. Since then, I have been following both of these and the euy2k forum almost daily-looking for real info, not just the happy spin I see in the press. (not that I mind good news-I am very hopeful for it!) Theres so little time left....hoping that the info here and in similar groups will give me a bit of a head start on which way things will shake out, and how to prepare. Thanks

I have been here for about 2 weeks. I posted a question about converting DGI's to GI's and got many thoughtful responses, to the point where I think this is the best forum around. I have noticed that sincere questions begat sincere responses, and sarcasm is responded in kind. There is plenty of substance on this forum, but there is also plenty of chaff. If I were to throw to thoughts out to the rest it would be to discuss: the consequences of being prepared and the minimal dollar cost for substancial preparation. It does not take that much cash to get yourselves set pretty good, and hte consequence of being wrong is usully edible. I plan on sticking around for two reasons: 1) To get the heads up on panic. You people glean very well. and 2) get additional tips to help others prepare. Thanks for having a place to listen as well as speak and be heard. Pete

How about a glossary for all the esoteric terms eg. DGI ,troll, Etc.

-- Dae Walker (gandg@kwic.com), July 31, 1999.

DGI=Definitly Gotten over It

GI= Genuine Idiot

Troll= ANYONE with a view that differs even SLIGHTLY from the death, carnage and destruction that the sicko's in this place expect and hope for.

Think carefully before dipping your toes into this infested cult palace, people. the most recent proof. Look through the archives of failed predictions and general nastiness towards ALL who disagree.

You have been given FAIR WARNING about this place. Make up your own mind.

GI~ Gets It (in other words, understands that the possibilities of what COULD happen are well worth preparing for)

DGI~ Doesn't Get It (doesn't think there will be many if ANY problems. Doesn't seem to have the ability to see the big picture. Thinks only in terms of America, as if we "stand alone" in this world.)

DWGI~ Doesn't WANT To Get It (has too much to lose if something bad happens, so they basically put their hands over their ears and say "I'm NOT listening!)

Guess which category "Webster" fits into?

CUGI= Can't Un G et It. Too brainwashed to know they have NO technical background, and have been listening to Idiots with no technical background (North, etc)

HFTWBDTB= "hoping for the worst but dreading the best". This type of "gi" is the worst. besides having the millennium contagion, they look at their pathetic, boring lives and wish for change. If TEOTWAWKI occurs, maybe THEY can become the new masters! Since this goal is SOOOOOO important, they will not accept new facts of remediation, or disguse holes in their logic proccess. Far better to remain on the emotional "anticipitory" high of a brave new world than face the reality that they make or break their own lives, and only they can keep it from being boring and humdrum. 'Always better to blame someone else than myself', thinks the HFTWBDTB-style "GI".

Guess which category "just@helping.out" fits into?

Definer, I hope you remember these words around April or May of next year:

"they make or break their own lives"

-- (just@helping.again), July 31, 1999.

Ed Yourdon just introduced a new one: RGI: Really Get It.

The RGI is already done with preps and stays alert.

-- alphabet soup (stockpiled@for.Y2K), July 31, 1999.

Yes! RGI! I noticed that too. What a great acronym! Thanks yet again Ed.

-- Bingo1 (howe9@pop.shentel.net), July 31, 1999.

I've been comming here for at least a month and some of the posts are informative others are useless. I fall in somewhere between GI and RGI with just a few loose ends to tie up. My question is what are trolls? I haven't seen any trolls on other sites. How can I tell when I see a troll post?

-- Army Girl (aGirl@ag.com), August 01, 1999.

How can you spot trolls? Easy. Notice who the folks are that always criticize others but never talk about Y2K.

Hi NEWBIES! Hang with us... <:)=
