Question for PNG or others in Japan

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I'll be going to Japan (Tokyo area and Okinawa) soon on a Y2K assessment visit. Any heads up on infrastructure readiness (power, water, supply chain, etc) would be appreciated.

Just let me know when you're coming...I'm 20 minutes from Tokyo and 15 minutes from Yokohama. My email address is real and I'll give you my phone numbers to call me when you get here.

Good to see that you still check in occasionally MoVe Immediate! Please keep us informed on what's happening with you!!

Yes, the last we read, MVI had good news about Feds being further along than he thought they'd be. More good news if you have it please!

Things from my end do look pretty good. Most of the effort at this point is being directed toward contingency planning. Hardware has been upgraded, communcations infrastructure has been upgraded (routers, switches, etc). Backup power is in place with plenty of fuel. Applications for the most part have been remediated, but not frozen. This is some cause for concern, but not too much. I've been to approximately 10 sites in as many states for on site reviews, plus performed IV&V on several systems. My biggest concern is still power, water, communications, and the supply chain. I think many small business will suffer. I coming around more to Yourdon's "1 year of disruptions with a 10 year recession" way of thinking and becoming less of a doomer. However, I don't plan on being in DC on the rollover. Too risky for my blood.

Thank you, MVI, there's hope it won't go Infomagic! Very happy to have good news from somebody seeing it first-hand in the trenches. WheeeHeeee!

A&L from C,

Please keep in mind that I'm just looking at what amounts to a pretty small piece. I feel better about things but I don't want that to keep people from preparing.

Oh, we're prepped to the gills now, as much as suburban apt living can be, but we need to stock up more hope! Thanks, MVI, any evidence the .gov is better than clueless idiot lying dimwits is cause for celebration ;^) Reliable anecdotal evidence is hard to come by. May your small piece be indicative of peace!

MVI san,

If you have not been to Japan before, you may find it useful to ask someone who has been there to give you some tips on manners, e.g. politeness. I'm not suggesting that you are not well mannered, but that manners are taken more seriously in Japan than here. As on outsider, you will not be expected to be up to par, and I'm not thinking of the finer points, but some of the basics may be useful.

Jerry

Jerry B, Thanks for the tip.

Andy, pretty much like a bike. I was pretty sore for the first few days. After that it was like I never left.
