As a programmer soon to turn bartender I would like to say...

Pollys you do need to get a grip. Y2K is real. Mistakes will happen, others will be blamed. I have found bugs in my own software and also a couple of my Y2K fixes had bugs. I am not the best programmer around but am also far from the worst. I can not say for a fact that all of my software will run trouble free next year. Can you?

Some time back a retired reporter posted concerning problems with KP&L in Kansas City. His handle was RC. This is worthy of followup by anyone in the metro area with contacts. There have been substation failures weekly in eastern Kansas. It always seems to be due to a squirrel.

In a post today government banning of ammo sales was mentioned as a possibility. IMHO it is almost a given. Consider tomorrow as your last chance to purchase ammo in case it is. If you have an extremely accurate 22 rifle as I do stocking up on 22 ammo in lieu of more 30 caliber may be the way to go.

So long for now my bartending class starts in 15 minutes.

What post suggested a ban on ammo sales Ed? Can you post the thread or give a URL to the article that notion came from?

You're on the money about KCP@L. That announcement of completion they made was a joke. I suppose 'technically' they may fall into line with the concept of being Y2K ready, they just can't generate or keep the fire alarms from ringing. If they fixed it, something isn't working correctly.

As for the possible ammo sales ban....would you please make me a Margarita Ed?On the rocks please, alot of salt.

:)

Sorry. That is supposed to be 'KCP&L'. Ed's new skill got me excited!

Update on Kansas City:

The Board of Public Utilities Nearman Power Plant in Kansas City, Kansas (Note: NOT a part of KCP&L) sustained a very serious conveyor fire last week. Completely took this plant out of operation. Thankfully, BPU had brought a mothballed plant back into operation due to the Hawthorne power plant explosion (KCP&L) last February, and they are limping by. Had a day a few weeks ago where they voluntarily cut power to a sector of the city to conserve energy. (Did *not* go over well for those residents!). BPU is trying to arrange for a replacement conveyor, trying really hard (?!?) to do this without raising rates.

KCP&L is being hit very hard during our current heat wave - so much so that for the very first time in history, they have requested that several large businesses, ie., the Fairfax GM assembly plant in Kansas City, Kansas, and the Allied Signal plant suspend operations tomorrow (Friday, July 30, 1999). The February explosion at the KCP&L Hawthorne plant has had far reaching consequences for the entire city - even those outlying areas (and KC Kansas) who weren't *directly* dependant on their power production. Originally, KCP&L had predicted a quick repair; now, no one is saying much of anything. Have heard some *anecdotal* information from sources we trust implicitly -- QUITE interesting.

Temperature here currently (11:33pm) is 95. Forecast temperature for tomorrow is 104 or higher, with heat indexes of 115 - 120.

Got ice?

It's 12:15am, and we just got home from the big George Brett celebration, and it's still hotter than a pistol out there. Understand that most of a major mall (Oak Park) was without power this afternoon, and one of the suburbs, Prairie Village. I confirmed that with my sister in law who lives over there. Gal next door works at St Luke's Hospital. Said they are prepared to switch to their own power supply tomorrow to alleviate the demand. Should be interesting. KCP&L is a mess.
