I've found washboards in several hardware stores out in rural areas here in N. TX. I don't think they were in the musical department.

Washboards can often be found at hardware stores, but modern ones are frequently of poor quality. Rough wood and poorly sealed joints and holes are one indication. Washboards need to be heavy enough not to float in the washtub, although new ones will absorb some water . they are made with both metal and glass washing surfaces, with the glass ones usually heavier.

IMO getting an old one at a garage sale or antique store would be a good idea if the wood is in decent condition. Other handy laundry tools are a good plunger for agitating the clothes and a mop bucket with wringer for wringing them out. Plastic pails and washbasins are something to invest in now, both for laundry, and for the sinks so that wash water can be conserved for flushing, watering plants, etc.

Here is a QUESTION? Should wood on a washboard be treated with boiled linseed oil like the handles of garden tools? Would the linseed oil get on clothes, especially with hot water? I have used a washboard, but am not familiar with long term care for them. Thanks.

I picked up a small washboard (for delicates) at a hardware store. But the best ones I got (regular sizes) were on Ebay (www.ebay.com) auction, I purchased a metal one and also a glass one. They were in very good condition and I was quite pleased. I just don't have time to travel much to pick up these things so the internet has been a great help in getting preps unavailable locally.
