local telecom

Just sharing this......

Dinner tonight with friends, who had dinner last week with another friend. Other friend works for our local telecom.

"Hows the Y2K testing and repair coming?"

"What testing? They aren't do ANYTHING. We are all scheduled to be on duty from XXX till XXX over the year end to fix anything that fails."

The Telecom guy is well aware of Y2K and the possibilities but is not preparing in any way. "Whatever happens, happens. We can't get ready for it anyway".

If any details concerning this unverified friend of friend story come up I'll let all know. My phone company is Commenwealth Telephone in PA.

Another story... direct from horses mouth, a guy who poo poo'ed Y2K while interviewing me on national radio last year...

He is also a customer of mine.,,, was in last week. Reports he is on parking commission, City of Lancaster. Five parking garages. All back office stuff is fixed. Only problem left is the card system and automatic gates. 80% of their money comes through that system. Vendor is over a year late making it work past Y2K and keeps putting them off. Parking commission is now working on contingency plans, which involve manual gates and 24 hour attendants they can't afford. His comment...... "If we can't get a stinking parking garage working right.........."

Our fire department is running their whole system, everything from alarm handling to records keeping to football pool on an ancient IBM As400. Isnt compliant or ready. Two firefighters said "Its going to be replaced this year but they have to figure out with what and how it will be funded". Nobody is assigned to deal with this.

Our town has 25,000 people in it.

Well, in a town of 25,000, you truly ought to be able to go back to pen and paper for fire dept. It just means that EVERYONE keeps up on their OWN recert dates, their OWN vac dates, etc. The village gets to see SOMEONE in the fire house all the time......

I have spent most of my life in PA (living in many different areas) and I never heard of them.

Ever heard of Bell Atlantic? You know the ones who pay James Earl Jones millions of dollars for his voice and image?

Troll.

Well nothere, it's nice that you identify yourself as a troll so we don't have to guess. What I can't figure out is what I said that made you curse at me. As for who Commonwealth telephone is, you can always just dial 555-1212 and ask information. They will give you the number and then you can call for their company info. When information asks for the city, just tell them Lancaster Pennsylvania.

Yes, I have heard of Bell Atlantic. Had them as a carrier at other places in PA we have lived. Millions to advertise..... Commonwealth does not advertise as far as I know. They are a puny telecom but the only one available for local service where I live. Commonwealth covers local service in a small area, Bell Atlantic covers a good part of the entire East Coast as I remember.

So what?
